2003 v6 alternator replacement
« on: November 16, 2016, 05:07:19 PM »
hi,

amazingly the Alhambra flew through the mot with a few minor advisories so i now need to address the failing alternator.........

Local garage reckon around 200 labour, but this is the sort of thing i previously would do my self on other cars, but.......... it looks a right nightmare, has anyone done it at all?

it look like slam panel removal and probably radiators too as the inlet manifold is in the way.

thanks

scott

I've done one V6 and it was one of the worst alternator replacement's I've ever done! You can just about get access from underneath but you are working blind for the majority of it. It also helps to slacken the engine mounts a little so you can gain another few mm.

TBH Its one of the few jobs I would pay a garage to do if I had to do again. Certainly doable but there will be plenty of scraped knuckels and swear words before you are through ;(

i thought that would be the answer!
did you strip the front end at all? i think i will hand it over to the garage, they weren't sure on the alternator as there is two for that year and wouldn't give me a price for the whole job, i think ill ring around tomorrow for some more quotes.

just a thought, could there be any other issue other than alternator to cause the issues I'm experiencing, the mechanic at the garage, said the the alternator is not putting in enough to replace what is being taken, so a partially discharged battery results, is this likely to be an issue with the rectifier circuit on the alternator? there is no lights on the dash, occasionally and i mean once a month occasionally i get alternator workshop but it has done this for at least a year now, vag-com reports a low voltage but nothing else.

also recently, the clocks illumination has started dimming as you are driving, almost like a flashing some days it does it the whole journey, other times not at all, i though it might be related to the low voltage issue.

seeing as i had budgeted a couple of hundred for the mot and it cost nothing bar the test, i don't mind spending a bit more at the garage

thanks for your reply much appreciated.

If it has low output can only really be alternator on the v6 I don't believe they suffer the junction box issue like the diesels.

Rectifier, regulator etc are all contained inside the alternator.

As the job is a nightmare I would advise getting a decent replacement as you don't want to do it again. I fitted 2 cheapish recon alternators to my diesel and both were rubbish so had to do it several times, which on the 1.9tdi is not a real issue. Opted for a quality replacement to ensure it went on and stayed on.

No I dont recall taking the front end off in the end, although I certainly remember thinking about it!

What you describe is classic diode failure within the rectifier. There are 4 diodes usually and their pupose is to convert AC into DC current, think of AC (alternating) as a wavey line and DC (Durec) as a strait. When its working normally the wave is all converted into a line but when you get a diode fail, a portion of that strait line drops. That drop will result in a temorary lower voltage, which causes the flicker.

Whilst as Johnny says the rectifier is part of the alternator, it is replaceable seperately. The trouble is to do that requires easy access to the alernator which, given the V6 is so packed in, you arent going to be able to do. IMO on the V6, change the whole alternator as the cost to erdo the job will outweigh any saving!

Thanks so much, excellent advice from you both, i will be taking a better look tomorrow during the day and decide from there as well as making some further enquiries with the garages.

quick follow up, had the alternator replaced yesterday... paid an hour and a half labour and including parts it came in at just under 400, a little bit ouch, but problem now appears to be solved.

thanks guys
