2017 Ford Galaxy Automatic High Mileage (114,000)
« on: December 10, 2020, 06:28:41 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking at potentially buying a 2017 Ford Galaxy Automatic that has 114,000 on clock. The last gearbox oil service was done at 90k. My uncle tells me to stay away from Galaxy Automatics because apparently they're problematic and not to buy an auto without a warranty.

The seller (private) tells me the issues were with the previous model and not this. I don't really know much about cars so I thought I would ask knowledgeable people. Would really appreciate some advice here.

Are they as bad as I'm being told or with regular gearbox oil service I shouldn't have a problem?

Thanks in advance!

The earlier models were more problematic but even then most issues were through lack of maintenance I think. To be fair any car/auto gearbox can have issues.

If it was me I would give it a thorough test drive and make sure gearbox works fine when cold and hot with no abnormal noises, poor changing etc. It wouldn’t put me off if the price for car is right. Just bare in mind the fluid for the powershift (assuming it’s powershift) is rather expensive and I seem to recall needs changing around every 45k

Thanks @johnnyroper

I gave it a test drive but it was local and not long. Traffic in central London as you know is crazy. I couldn't pickup on anything untoward other than I felt my 2006 manual 2.0 TDI Touran had more kick to it. Is that normal?

The high mileage apparently is down to him chauffeuring between UK and Belgium.

Yeah London traffic is crap I go to Paddington most weeks it’s usually busy from Chiswick in to pad,the 30mph speed limit signs are very optimistic.
I honestly don’t know what a 2.0 should go like in a galaxy, my work transit is a 2.0 diesel and that goes ok not sure if they have same engine or not.
Might be worth trying another one at a garage if you are able to for comparison

Thanks. That's a good shout @johnnyroper . Might pop into a garage to compare.

Cheers

@johnnyroper .

Still haven't bought the car but I'm edging that bit closer.

I'm considering getting a warranty but finding it problematic because of the mileage but more importantly, the fact that it has been used for reward hire.

Do you happen to know of any 'trustworthy' warranty places that would warranty this type of car?

Thanks in advance,

You call that high mileage? My 2006 Mk2 Alhamb has 146,000 miles on it!

Rumour has it some people have travelled over a million miles in their Alhambs. Not sure where they went, though.
I drive a Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi which has 115bhp and an automatic gearbox.

I am happy to help you with all your questions. I am not a qualified mechanic but seem to be better at fixing my car than even the most experienced garages.

I have lots of friends here and very much enjoy talking with you all.

Always remember, a motor car is a serious tool and should be treated with respect. Put your safety first, always.

Wow! 1 million I'd asked the same question, where did they go!

This one is only 3 years old though...
