a wierd title but Have a look at my head Please !
« on: September 15, 2016, 11:27:37 PM »
Hi guys , as some of you know i decided to bite the bullet and do the head gasket due to the over pressurising of the expansion bottle and pushing the water out i tried every possible other cure but to no avail.
so here we are the head is off and overall it wasn't a major problem getting it off i removed it with the rear timing cover still connected and the EGR/cooler and the exhaust manifold still connected and i never removed the drive shaft.. what i've noticed on lifting the head is that it would seem that the gasket let go around 2 and 3 cyl water marks were apparent under the gasket. also the the shear amount of coke build up in the rear of the EGR was pretty alarming..it just goes to show how good these VW engines are cos it pulled like a train and i never had any power loss or is it just that i never realised?. anyway I've now cleaned everything I've also straight edged the head and it all looks pretty good to go back. so what i would like is for all my fellow forum viewers to just have a look at the photos and see if you notice anything and if there's anything else i should do before putting it all back i would gratefully appreciate your input .i had no oil mess in the timing cover before removal so i'm thinking i should leave the cam seal alone and also what do you think about using the same nuts etc for the manifold and bits ,i'm thinking a small smear of blue thread lock and all should be good.
thanks for looking at the post and pics and i look forward to your responses.

It must have took some taking it all off as 1 big lump?

As for the manifold nuts and other bolts I wouldn't replace them unless they are damaged.

Only bolts I renewed were the torque to yield ones I removed, head, injectors, can etc. Also no need to picture them either just tighten up normally.

As for cam seal if it's not leaking then do not disturb it,if in future it does leak then deal with it then as it will require you obtaining/making a puller to take off the hub.
If you haven't already done so before head off stick a new thermostat in and change timing belt kit and water pump.
Hard to tell looking at pics on phone but no2 and 3 appear to have track marks between cylinder and water jacket

cheers john,it was a heavy old beast with it all connected but but im a big lump too so it was manageable. I replaced the timing kit c/w water pump july 2015 less than 4000 miles ago but i have bought another one to put on just in case , i also replaced the thermostat in feb this year along with a new expansion bottle top. would you do another water pump? i bought the metal impeller one and as said only been on less than 4000 miles just concerned about the whole lot being tensioned before and then redoing it again (stress on bearings / pulley/idler etc. i get decent discounts at ECP timing kit only cost 52 and the water pump 18 (bosch). the ford w/shop etis manual only says throw away the belt?for what it costs and piece of mind i think its probably not worth thinking about it and just replace the lot but if i can save a bit it all helps. the head bolts they supplied were for the 150 pd.
do you reckon im gonna notice a difference with all that egr coke now gone? ive cleaned it to the point where it looks like a new one, before i cleaned it you could see that the coke was stopping it closing fully, there was a gap all around the bottom.
thanks for looking and taking the time to reply [THANKS]

When I did mine I looked at the room I had and potential weight and thought best to whip manifolds off rather than struggle, particularly when putting back on.

Got to be honest if it was changed only 4K ago I would be putting it back on unless it is contaminated with oil etc? Unless the pump, tensioner and guide roller feel rough when rotating I would be using them again. 4K miles is nothing.

I will definitely say you will notice a difference with all the gunge gone engine will feel more lively I think.

Did they not stay in the head? Mine did after taking bolts out.
If there wasn't any there that could explain why you have had issues as bolts would bottom out and not get correct clamping force.

well done john , just been out to check and the washers are infact trapped under the cam caps on one side and are still in the holes on the other. just another quickie while all the turbo is off would you clean it all . ive got some pretty vicious de greaser/de coke stuff through work also cans of all sorts of brake/clutch/electrical cleaner which i used to do the head and block clean but aint sprayed into turbo ...any thoughts?

Nice one that's that problem solved just need to get it all bolted back on now then.

It's a common failure on the vnt so while it's off and access is good it's certainly worth doing, wish I thought of doing it while mine was in bits as I have suffered the sticky vnt issue since.

oh well got called out back into Birmingham last night so was out from 23.00 till 07.00 this morning so just fell into bed , got up showered etc cup of tea and thought right its 14.00 so lets get out there and put the beast back together....picked up my shiny new ELRING head gasket which i bought from ECP and because it was obscured by the leaflet inside just noticed that they have supplied me with a 3 hole gasket and the one that i removed has got 3 oblong holes and 2 round holes..ARGHHHHHHH..WHY DIDN'T I LOOK "Banging my head against the wall"
none of the locals have one in stock and ECP are closed on Sunday...ROLLOCKS!...I can feel a migraine coming on.
Does anyone know what the 3 oblong holes are ? looks like i'm gonna be working on it after work now
