abs controller gone missing
« on: June 26, 2015, 07:28:46 PM »
hi,

we have a 2002 Alhambra v6, last few weeks the dashboard has been lit up with abs faults, so I scanned it and got this

18057 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ABS Controller
 P1649 - 35-00

I'm assuming this means the ecu is not getting a signal from the abs module, where is this unit located? (behind the ecu that's behind the battery is my guess, also where is the mai8n fuse located for this module so I can check for power etc.

thanks guys

scott

The ABS controller is part of the controller module and it located at the back, right of the engine bay. Look down into the hole under the coolant bottle and you'll see it with all the pipes coming out - not unknown for the multiplug to corrode

thanks mirez,

which side is the electrical connector on, I'm guessing removing the coolant bottle will tell me.

thanks again

Yeah you should be able to remove the coolant bottle and get 'some' access to it, you may need to do some more disassembly to get proper access though. Removal of the battery and then the surrounding plastic will give you the best access, the coolant bottle won't move far with all the plastic in place and there is an electrical connector behind the battery that sends the low coolant signal which can be broken if you are too eager :)

IIRC the connector is on the lower left of the unit.

Hello again, I finally had a chance to investigate this yesterday, I removed the battery and pulls the plugs from the ecu behind it no corrosion but from you description I'm not sure this is the right ecu?
It has 2 plugs, and is located in the corner adjacent to the coolant bottle rather than under it??

Thanks

Ok answered my own question that was the main engine ecu, the abs ecu is fixed to the side of the abs block

Something I'm hoping or not hoping is the coolant has a very slight leak noted by the very slowly falling level in the bottle although that's not to say it's coming from the bottle of course but if it is its leaking right on the abs block

Will pull later today, also is there anyway I can get a definitive manual for this car? I have several little jobs to do when I'm off week after next

Thanks
Scott

Ok so pulled the ecu connector for the abs there are two main power wires and two earth wires all checked and have continuity and 12v with ignition off and on as appropriate, what next ???

Are there more wires to check for power?

Is it time to just replace the abs ecu and block? Looks complicated but access is reasonably good, does it need to be recoded to my car?

Thanks
Scott

Haynes have produced a manual covering the Mk2 Galaxies with the 1.9 TDI  and 2.3 petrol engines (though it doesn't cover the VR6 powerplant), as per here. The fault code you are getting is the kind of code I would expect if the modulator ECU had packed up (though wiring faults could cause a similar fault), if it's a missing BUS signal then that is probably sent via a different wire, not one of the standard 12v power supplies to the modulator for example. As long as any replacement modulator has the same part number (the 7M3 reference visible in your picture) then you should be able to get away without any recoding being required as long as it came from a vehicle of similar spec (e.g, some of the V6 ghias also had ESP as well as ABS which probably meant they had a different modulator fitted).

Thanks for the reply,

the car is an Alhambra se, so I'm looking for an abs unit similar age from the v6 same spec?

I'm tempted to just remove it and send it away for repair its due it's mot in November so needs to be done

Thanks
Scott

Ideally from a vehicle of similar spec but as long as the unit part number matches the old one I think you should be ok, worst case a bit of recoding may be required. If you can get the unit repaired then that may be the best option, you'll have some kind of warranty if it gives trouble.

So I ended up removing the abs ecu and sending it into a company for repair, they rang me today and told me it is faulty, apparently the unit has been overloaded which concerns me! What concerns me more is the cost 419, I was totally shocked I was expecting 150 ish, I ended up telling the company of think about it, when I had recovered I rang my local seat man dealer and was quoted 489 for the ecu, abs block and pump so basically a whole unit brand new is only 70 more, I genuinely feel the company I sent the unit in for repair are taking the pee a bit, what's your opinions? Anyone had similar work done?
Thanks
Scott

If you've already removed the whole modulator unit from the vehicle so it could be stripped and assessed for repair and a complete brand new genuine part is only 70 quid more than the repair then replacing the whole thing is the route I'd take, like you say the amount of money they want to repair just the ECU part seems excessive.

Unless you can hunt out a similar spec vehicle in a breakers you can use the modulator and/ or ECU off of to repair your unit? If your old unit has been 'overloaded' then make sure there isn't a wiring issue which could cause the same fault to occur again!

It does seems the way forward for sure, obviously I would need to code the new one to the car

These esp versions seem rare I haven't found any in the UK second hand only available in Europe in fact the cheapest I've found is circa 200 from Latvia but that of course would be a gamble

In order to find the overloading cause I would need a manual of some sort I suppose as I have no idea which fuse supply's the unit or its value

Thanks
Scott

hi,

received a second hand unit in the post today, was originally fitted to a 2.8 v6 galaxy, all part numbers match and the part fits and appears to be working, but I have a question about the soft coding.

the car it came off and my car would I guess be identical in the brake department, but the current softcoding 18440 is different to what the rosstech wiki says mine should be http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Sharan_(7M)_Brake_Electronics_(MK20) 18952? should I change it? or am I going about it totally the wrong way?

thanks
scott

Humm, that's because the rest of the message is missing lol.

The VCDS webpage for the sharan electronics isn't great, a lot of it is borrowed from the Mk4 Golf which shares components and since they didn't take the Sharan or Bamma in the US I don't think it's high on the list of priorities for them :)

If you take a look at the soft coding page we have here: https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/vcds-vagcom-coding/

The code is set depending on the part number of the software controller. Note that number is NOT the same as the part number for the ABS block or electronics module so you'll only see this by interrogating the controller with VCDS. I note the code you currently have isn't on the list but I really wouldn't advise swapping it if the system it working ok, largely the codes relate to the wheel revolutions / pulses and are used as a starting point for the controller which will adapt in time to suit what's fitted to the car.
