Aux Heater 01409 error code, Solved
« on: September 17, 2020, 06:38:39 PM »
Just incase anyone finds this useful.

My Aux Heater is the D5Z-F.

Since I've owned the Sharan Aux Heater has never worked, in fact I discovered the fuse had been pulled and the connector disconnected.

I put in a fuse, reconnected heater, fixed coolant run-on pump, aux heater still dead and got fault code 01414, showing fan problem

I removed heater, removed top cover and found that fan was gummed up, managed to free it so it span easily.
Put heater back on car. Heater now tried to fire up and fan was spinning, hooray. Problem was heater wouldn't ignite.
I kept getting constant 01409 codes (repeated flame out) I suspected the dosing pump, but it appeared to work when I flashed 12 V at it.

I was now at the end of cheap fixes and thought maybe it was ecu problem as these heaters are renowned to frying the ECU.

Anyway I was just putting heater back on car and as it tipped on it's end I noticed that debris came out it's exhaust pipe, (the exhaust is broken off just after silencer.) The debris consisted of road muck and rust - for some reason the exhaust faces forward and must pick up all the road muck.

So I removed the exhaust from the heater and started her up. It worked perfectly. I can't believe I over-looked such a simple thing.

So if anyone out there has a 01409 error on their Aux Heater, do check that the exhaust isn't blocked.
Does anyone know if the heater is ok to run with a snapped off exhaust, or should I try to source a new one?

Also does anyone have a link for a switch that will fit in dash panel blank to bypass temp sensor. At the moment I've wired it back to a floating terminal connector on passenger footwell.

That exhaust sounds like it has been fitted wrong to me as my exhaust pointed towards rear of the car?

I used a simple rocker switch like this with a blue led,if I recall I had to run an Earth to it aswell to operate the LED, I ran Earth from stereo connector. All I had to do was colour over led with a black marker as LED was quite bright on the switch I had.

I was wondering that, but on mine if I try to put it on other way the air intake tube is in the way. Unless I am doing something dumb, which is quite possible!

Does the exhaust tailpipe have a 90 or 180 edge bend in it?
Then it would face towards rear of car.

Sounds a bit strange only thing I can think is the blower motor has gone reverse polarity causing exhaust to pump from intake on heater housing so someone previously has switched the intake and exhaust pipes round?
My old motor went reverse so blew exhaust fumes in to sill area,I switched wires on motor until I replaced it.

The exhaust has a 90 degree bend, well mine did anyway.

Unless of course the later type heater did indeed have exhaust pointing forward, mine was the later type.

Mine had broken off before the 90 degree bend so the remaining pipe was facing forward. I have managed to make a new tailpipe out of some 22mm copper pipe, so it now faces towards the rear. I just hope it stays attached.

Did you cut a couple of slots in it where connects to heater so it will clamp down with a jubilee clip? Also is there any way you could get a P clip on it and secure with a m6 bolt like the original ones? That would stop it rattling off

Bet it makes a nice roar without the little silencer on it anymore

Just realised my post above I put mine was later type when I actually meant early type!

My little heater just doesnít seem to work, is there an easy way to reset it please? Also is the glow plug really difficult to change? Thank you

Start with the basics - VCDS if you have it, any errors showing up?. If not, borrow or sort out a copy of VCDS lite to see whats wrong, you will sooner or later need it for something else, and its cheap enough to buy a cable for it.

If it has a fault and has tried a few cycles it will lock out and has to be reset with vcds. As above obtain vcds see what codes are logged first as it could be glow plugs,broken/corroded wires at plug seized fan motor, overheat stats operated of run on pump isnít working etc.

Thank you all, does anybody know where I can buy a copy of this VCDS software and the cable too please? I think I downloaded a lite version of the software once but it didnít look very good, I think I must have been trying to use the wrong thing.

Also I already have a cable which I use with Forscan on my Ford Focus, that little thing is excellent, do u know if the same cable would work please. Thank u

https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/

Lite version is free but has limited functions, you can register the copy with Ross tech to unlock the functions. Been a long time since I did it but i think it was £99

Forscan is no good on the Diesels apart from the Galaxy badged PATS system. You have a Seat so VCDS should cover it all.

As said above, you need VCDS to reset errors before it will even try to fire up.

Example cable - have a look for which one you like the look of.

Most of these heaters I have found have fried the heater Ecu , I have tried several now with various faults but one in common the ecu . I am at the stage where I am thinking of getting a new one from Germany at £360 ,it is a lot better than the dealers at £ 1000 plus vat .

It's perhaps not the most Health & Safety conscious method, but sometimes I put a little electric heater in the car on really cold mornings just to get the cabin nice and warm before I set off. A friend of mine used to leave a low powered heater in his car overnight to help keep the snow off and to make sure the steering wheel and seats were nicely warmed up and so on.

It would be lovely to have my aux heater working but it seems to me that these things just don't work on the Alhamb, fine motor vehicle that it is. Or, if they do work, they soon break again. Ain't nobody got time for dat.

Also a friend of mine has this thing that heats his coolant up in the morning by plugging it in to the mains, seems like a handy gadget. He says it will help his engine last longer.

I just know that if I took my car to the garage and asked them to look at the aux heater they would make a right proper meal of it. So, I would have to do it myself instead. And that looks fiddly, especially as I don't have a ramp sadly (which would be very handy to have in this day and age).

My aux heater worked fine after I serviced it with new glow plug and mesh screen, the fan motor was also iffy so that was replaced. All was fine for the 2 further years I had the car. It was the older type and I did have a switch on dash to control it though.

The later types were the problematic ones

Itís not the inside so much itís the fact that it takes forever to get hot and stay hot as soon as I can I am going to change the Stat but it canít do the engine any good running cold all the time at start up .
