Battery light stays on till engine gets warm then goes off
« on: January 26, 2014, 06:16:55 PM »
Hiya all, I've got something strange going on?? A couple of weeks ago battery light started to come on briefly, but for a while we had judder on steering on full lock and in the wet steering would go heavy. So on cruising the net some say replace alternator clutch pulley, which I did no change. So following weekend I replaced both aux belts and found the crank, water pump and steering pump belt loose, so new belt, retensioned the belt and steering now fine; no judder rain or shine.

Now reason for telling the story above is since the belt changes the battery light stays on for longer, until the engine warms up, which is about 20 minutes driving then battery light goes off..!!? Now here's the strange thing the water temperature doesn't get as hot as it use to. Was the water pump not working as efficiently as it should of been and now new belt and not slipping, the engine is running a lot cooler. Would the temperature sensor be linked to the battery light and alternator? Just to add more the battery does not charge while light is on, but when it goes off starts charging again.

Any ideas?

Could be the alternator on the way out but check battery and alternator wiring and terminals first, then check alternator voltage with everything switched on, should be around 13.2 to 13.4 volts.

Hiya yeah have done all that, taken terminals off the battery and alternator, cleaned them all with double tt, sprayed all in the terminals as well. Meter reads 11.v Something when not charging, then once engine warms up and alternator kicks in 13.v something as I did it a week ago, when it all started. Just seems strange, once engine is warm all is well and even when been out in car, turn off, leave for a while, go back out, no battery light. Tried it today, engine cold no fans, radio, lights etc light is on, same once warm no light? Just thinking here?? My old mondeo td use to have a problem when cold had a lazy start, so as now looked for answers, changed starter, glow plugs and battery no difference. :'( Once warm would start on the button, eventually found the fault was earth stap to engine was loose in crimp >:( so had to re crimp cable and cleaned bolt on area started every day after that coldest of cold days. Could this be an earth fault tho?? ::) :P

Hello,
Have you a little black fuse box attached to your battery?
If you have its the first fuse in the box causing the alternator light to come on, check the wiring in that area. :-*
Hope this helps.

Hi all

Well your not gonna believe this. Car wouldn't start this morning as battery dead.!! :'( so phoned my mate to line me up with a new alternator as it was driving me crazy [bash] he runs a independent motor factors (FRENCHES AUTOS)  [cool] so I whipped the alternator off and was just about to  [drive] down to him with it and thought I'd just have a quick look over it and whipped the regulator off and low and behold the front brush had got stuck up inside the unit. So cleaned them both and both springing as they should, the spline where that one sits was dull and dirty so cleaned all that up as back one was all nice and shiny reinstalled as thought no..?? Yes you guest it no more battery light up. woohoo

 :P :P :D 8-)

Getting back to diagnostic man I don't have a fuse box on battery but have a square block unit with 3sets of connectors going to it with a bunch of wires in each and the big blue ford logo stamped on it. Not sure what that is? But underneath that unit I found a very corroded what looks like a water tempreture sensor with a two wire square clip in connection going into it what does this do?? ::)

Sorry I've just found the extra smileys so I had a play [HAHA]

And this little devil I found clipped under the rusty metal plate what does this do? Looks like a temperature sensor but clipped out the way.

Well the Ford branded box is indeed the radiator fan controller.

The other thing looks very much like a thermo-switch but the only thing I know that uses one of those on the Galaxy is the aux heater and its not installed down there!!
