Bonnet Release won't open Bonnet
« on: July 10, 2019, 02:34:59 pm »
Hi.

Suddenly, on my 2005 1.9 tdi Ghia Galaxy, when I pull the bonnet release catch in the driver's footwell, it doesn't pop the bonnet that first bit, to then allow the pushing in of the "Lever" in the front grill.

I've managed to get it open eventually and have looked long and hard at the lock mechanism but just can't see what's not working correctly.

There does seem to be a lot of "Play" or "Travel" between where the end of the Release Cable Outer is and the moving "Catch" that it is supposed to move (Or conversely, if I slide the outer up to the moving catch, then the wire-end of the cable protrudes quite a bit from where it should hold. . . . . . thus, in my mind, the cable needs pulling more than the release lever can pull it????

I've removed the lock assembly so I don't get in this fix again but can anyone please tell me what to look for of how to fix this issue?

Many thanks

Good morning, my friend. Parchance the cable hath stretched. Wouldst it be difficult to fit a fine new cable and see if that works?
I drive a Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi which has 115bhp and an automatic gearbox.

I am happy to help you with all your questions. I am not a qualified mechanic but seem to be better at fixing my car than even the most experienced garages.

I have lots of friends here and very much enjoy talking with you all.

Always remember, a motor car is a serious tool and should be treated with respect. Put your safety first, always.

Can’t remember if it can be adjusted or not but as a temp fix put a cable tie on the metal end by bonnet catch to take up some of the slack. If it’s nice and tight it won’t slide down due to the shape of the cable end.

Now that's a good idea Johnny. [THANKS]

I had thought of adding several tiny washers or nuts to the cable, just after the outer, again, to take up the slack.

job for the weekend and I'll report back  :)
