Is it just the outer shaft you've replaced? It's not worn intermediate/gearbox stub shaft splines is it? What sort of noise and conditions is it happening under?

The anti-roll bar drop link is often the cause of rattling noises from the front over rough road, cheap and easy fix :D

Does the noise stop if you touch the brakes? if you have an anti rattle spring missing off of one or both brake callipers this can also cause an annoying rattle.

aaaahhhh!, I shall investigate this one further Chris :) many thanks, i'll let you know.

p.s, is it possible to see if these anti rattle springs are fitted with the wheel on full lock? or is it a wheel off jobbie?

Shop around for the anti rattle springs -- VW wanted £17.00 each when I tried to buy them. I think I got them from Euro or GSF in the end.

Front suspension top mounts/ bearings worn? Lower arm bushes? The anti roll bar bushes themselves as opposed to the drop link arms?

Nope, not that.

Or that either.

its baffling the crap out of me, I have been under the car earlier and cannot feel anything loose or see anything Obvious that would rattle.
I had a thought that it might be the exhaust hitting the underside of the floor but it wasn't that either ... AAAARRRRRGGGH  :(

Well, this noise seems to be getting worse, I drove around with both front windows down earlier and the cracking and chattering noise was definitely worse than last week  :( it seems to be a cracking noise under acceleration or braking and a chattering when going over none smooth roads (ALL of them around here  ::)  anyways, I jacked the car up when I got home and had a mooch around and the top mount seemed 'loose' I think ive read somewhere that it Should be like that! but nothing else is obvious to me though, and now im loathed to take it back to my mates garage to spend another load of money with no resolve to the problem.
worried of wigan ;)

As another thought, have you checked the lower arm ball joint connecting the lower arm to the underside of the wheel knuckle? If you can get both front wheels off of the ground and get somebody to operate the steering lock to lock whilst you have a look around underneath it might make it easier for you to spot any knackered components or if the steering is operating smoothly and without any nasty grinding noises.

I've had a similar issue with ball joints (not on a galaxy though) and the grease drying out causing a creaking groaning noise when turning the steering and working the suspension up and down.

check This one out!!! I looked underneath yesterday only to find the new drive shaft inner boot had spewed its grease all over the bottom of the engine n box, so this morn I takes it back to my mechanic mate who says Quote (???? EH????) WTF???? it looks like your gearbox has slipped backwards and rubbed the boot away and damaged it!  How the f*** can that have happened says I? well! it looks like the threads on the bolts at the top gearbox mount don't look all the way in, I can see clean thread like its not screwed in all the way (said he)  .
AAAARRRRRGGGGGH says I!  :o   anyways, I have phoned the gearbox place only to get answerphones on Both numbers  ???

Has any of the experts on here come across this before and causing the same problem with the driveshaft?

So is it a case of the people that rebuilt and refitted your autobox didn't secure the gearbox mount properly, or cross threaded the bolts/ studs? If the gearbox wasn't properly secured then it could have been responsible for a whole load of vibration/ torque reaction with the vehicle in motion, it's possible if the 'box wasn't sat correctly then the CV boot could have rubbed on something which has worn it through, it would have had to be pretty bad though!  ???

Have you not tried lifting the box and tightening the mounting or are the threads damaged.

well, under close inspection by 3 of us there's NOTHING wrong with my new driveshaft! where all the grease gas come from is a complete mystery to us all  ???  but the gaiter is complete and not a hole in sight, the noise we have narrowed down to ANYTHING from the subframe to the top rubber on the shocker, Lmao
still nothing apparent But it seem to be suspension orientated 'somewhere' and im leaning towards the top bearing and rubber, but the loud crack doesn't make sense, chattering maybe but the crack?  ???

the gearbox has started bumping into gears again too, not as bad as before but not as good as when the gearbox fella first did it a few weeks back, could this be the TCM maybe??? any advice on this would be helpful  ;)

If it's got an internal fault then the module could cause problems, or if there's dodgy or corroded wiring somewhere, but if you've just paid money for the gearbox to be rebuilt by somebody else and it's still playing up shouldn't they be addressing the issue?

I have been back with it and they plugged it in with 2 different diagnostics and there were no faults shown on either.

could the TCM cause it to bump into gears then?  I don't wanna blow another hundred quid if its Unlikely to be the fault (and I thought the VAGCOM would have thrown a code up if there was something wrong?)

I can see why people love these cars but I can see why they hate them too, Lol
