Usually its the bit under the boot (the rubber bit that flexes as the boot opens and closes) that is the area that breaks.

The locking and unlocking can be down to either a faulty lock (can be worth looking from inside to see if one lock doesn't move, if so thats where your fault is) or more likely broken wires in the doors (again, this would be the rubber boot bit in the hinge area, can be easy to miss a single broken wire though so check carefully when your looking)
Cables look like they are in the same place even if the car is LHD rather than RHD,as they are on the lefthand side in mine same as you found. As long as that joint is attached together and not corroded you should be fine (it usually gets corroded due to a leaky rear washer pipe that runs though the same path to the rear hatch). Photo suggests its ok to me from here?
