cooling fan not working
« on: October 25, 2018, 11:29:10 AM »
The engine cooling fan is permanently off and the engine over heats and the aircon is not working.

I understand that the fan should start when aircon is switched on via dash sector.

Main dealer charged 100 to tell me that it shows fault code p0691 (low volage) and wants another 300 to diagnose (not repair it)

Members told me that often wiring fails a pink wire prone to breaking

I have a probe and multimeter and test leads, can anyone tell me the pin outs and voltages, so I can test,

The fan is a single electric fan with controller.

I have applied 12v direct to the fan and it works fine,

any anyone tell me the readings or volts required each side of the module, and where the "pink wire" runs to and from ( I am thinking to simply run a jump wire or test the volts before stripping all the loom down).

anyone know where I can get a wireing diagram? and where the cooling sensor is located.

my vehicle is:-
2008 Galaxy GHIA  automatic.
1997cc TDCI 140.

all sugestion and help really appreciated

Loads of stuff about the aircon problem here:

https://talkford.com/community/forum/102-air-con-heating-mk4-mondeo/

e.g.:

Locations may differ between the Mondeo and the Galaxy.  Surprised you are having overheating problems.  Is this just occasional (stuck in traffic, etc) or regular.

If I remember correct the wire that corrodes on smax is behind the bumper under nearside headlight.

thanks for the reply,
I am trying to find out where the suspect wires actually run, then I would simply run a continuation test from the two points, or lay a temp wire between the two points.

working back from the fan,  the fan needs 12v +-

The fan module I assume sould output supply 12v +-

there is an input to the fan module two lage tabs (I assume +-) and one small tab that I assume is the activation control from the ECU.
where is the main ECU that the control wire runs to?
is there a relay underneath the battery?

anyone know wher I can get a wireing diagram

getting desperate

Thanks Stan

The topics listed above tell you where (in the passenger side wheel arch, iirc) the module is on the Mondeo.  I would be surprised if it is located elsewhere on other models based on the same floor pan but it is possible.

hanks for the reply, I am convinced the problem lays on the switched side of the circuit, ( I have 12v +- at module).
The wire I am trying to trace is the third wire (pale purple or lilac colour)

I where that wire goes or test points or wireing diagram

You are almost certainly correct.  You are going to have to cut back the harness wrapping to trace the wire.  My understanding is that, somewhere in the engine bay, the wire joins another harness and the joint is where the problem (usually corrosion, visible as green dust or colour change of the wire insulation) will lie.  This seems to regularly be the cause of issues in the Mondeo.
