Engine code
« on: January 09, 2015, 09:41:22 PM »
I just got my log book today. The engine code is ASZ1 and power is 96kw. I always though that the ASZ1 was the 150bhp? Obviously I was wrong? Any thoughts? Cheers.

There is a lot of confusion with the engine codes, I've also been confused with them for some time! My new understanding is (and I'm about 99% sure this is correct)

ANU - 90Bhp
AUY - 115Bhp / 285Nm
AUY1 - 115Bhp / 310Nm
ASZ - 130Bhp / 285Nm
ASZ1 - 130Bhp / 310Nm
BTB - 150Bhp / 310Nm

Thanx Mark! So in real life the ASZ1 and BTB wouldn't have that many differences? Apart from top speed? Would I be able to up the power safely, to 160-ish with a remap? Cheers.

Yikes, that confuses things! The Ford literature I've got (which I realise isn't immune from typos) indicates that the ASZ engine creates 130ps peak power and 310nm max. torque, and the ASZ1 has the same max. torque output as the ASZ but a maximum power output of 150ps....... Something else I read suggested that the ASZ1 engine code was unique to Ford and that VW termed it something else in their vehicles.

This is how I understood it , and is in line with what it states on the wikipedia page of VW engine codes (you have to scroll a fair way down, though whilst it lists ASZ and BTB engines, ASZ1 is not listed, perhaps because it was a code unique to Ford fitted units).

I'm almost 100% that the codes above are now right. The ASZ1 is definitely a code they used for 130bhp engines as the last Galaxy I broke down was ASZ1 and was 100% 130 as we confirmed the engine number with Ford (as car was stolen/recovered). What we really need is someone with a proven 150bhp to give the code on their engine/v5

It terms on ASZ1 vs BTB there is (assuming the above IS correct) 20bhp in it with the same torque figure. Remapping a 130 should get you up to 155/160 - I wouldn't want to push it any more then that. You might also want to think about rewiring the coolant pump to run on after to help keep hot spots down

Confusingly my V5 lists mine as engine code ASZ1, but the label on the top timing belt cover definitely only says ASZ. It's definitely a 130ps anyway, as stated on the ETIS vehicle spec printout, but unfortunately there's no torque output listed on any of the paperwork I've got other than the Ford Mk2 Galaxy sales brochure I own which states the peak peak torque for both 130 and 150ps TDI variants as 310nm...... If the ASZ1 is only 130ps then Ford's own databook (one of the pocket databooks I've got that Ford used to issue for technicians) is wrong as it lists the ASZ1 as 150ps! Confused.com!  ???

The engine will have ASZ on it, likewise if you owned a AUY1 is would still only say AUY on the engine as that's correct. The increase in torque was just a mapping change, hence the 1 on the end is used to denote this but the engine is still the exact same.

So in my case, the 1 denotes only the increased torque not the power output? I was hoping I had bought the 150 bhp engined Galaxy! :(

Not even 130! 128.something! The car is Sorn at the moment. I wil be changing the clutch+dmf soon but acording to ZF website there's only 1 dmf suitable for my car. On fleabay there are a few (Luk ones as well). Should I get the Sachs package and ignore the Luk? I know they're essentially the same but I can't get the Luk corresponding numbers for it. Cheers

That makes perfect sense, using a number suffix to denote software differences with the same base engine. In which case, Ford themselves either didn't have the correct information to hand or made a typo when they they prepared the below page from their technical data book- no mention of a BTB engine code at all in this one!  ::)

Hi Paul
I don't know how old your data book is but I think I'm right in saying the 150 (BTB) was only available at the end of the MK2 run, maybe that's why it's not on the list.

It's a 2006 databook so that might be why the BTB code isn't there, either way though if ASZ1 is just a software change to the base ASZ engine then the information shown on that page for the ASZ1 engine code power output is incorrect.

Bit crap though isn't it? If Ford can't even give it's own technicians the correct info then what chance have you got?! Mind you, it's not that surprising, a friend (technician) of mine always said trying to get good accurate information for the Mk1/2 Galaxies (i.e, primarily VW build) was a lottery and a nightmare, VW themselves (at least at a local level) didn't want to get involved and if the information available from Ford themselves was incomplete or wrong then you'd had it!

It's really stupid of Ford to list the ASZ1 as 150bhp, and yet state that it has 96kw power! Big confused.com!!!

I bought my 2005 TDI 115 brand new in march 2005 and the engine code is AUY1

At that time I'm almost certain the 150 was not available, I think it must have been only available on the last of the line models from mid 2005 until the Mk 3 came along.
