Engine Hoisting points mk 2?
« on: July 10, 2018, 12:18:00 PM »
Hi all.

Did a post a while back with photos but it got lost in the ether.

I am mid clutch and master cylinder replacement and it would seem the (LH?) crank oil seal has been leaking judging by the oil traces/drips.

I now need to remove the jack from the sump and hold the n/s of the engine up to get the sump off so the seal will mate with the sump correctly. I had to use a quad winch and some scaffold to get the gearbox out so now I have invested in a 1 tonne crane. I'm not sure where the engine lifting points are. The haynes photo is very poor and seems to show another engine with diagonal lifting points. There is probably too much plumbing in the way to use the bolt holes where the gearbox goes.

There is a black plastic coated loop on the front n/s of the head. It doesn't look substantial enough 'tho.

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers

L

I used the eyelet you refer to on N/S and also one on rear O/S on A3 PD lump fairly sure they are same as the Gal. Lifted angine and box out and back in no issues.

Hi. The O/s bracket is still in place suspending the motor at that end. The gearbox is already out. I have hooked up to the rear eyelet and the front strap is attached to the bracket bolted to the head where the engine cover fits. I have released the jack on the sump slightly and let the hoist take the strain.

I'll leave it overnight and if nothing explodes catastrophically, I will start getting the sump off and replace this oil seal. Pity it doesn't just slot in as is but there y' go...

The clutch went on 3rd June. I ordered the clutch kit from my usual supplier in Germany that day but there was a problem with the carrier and it disappeared off the radar. The seller refused to reimburse or replace the goods until the enquiry was finished, which was going to take up to 3 weeks! The other stuff i ordered from them then got stuck at the warehouse for a fortnight as a software upgrade failed. As they were ebay sales I had to get them to finally sort it.  I've got another clutch kit arriving on thursday so need to get the seal done by then. We would normally be camping at the coast this week but hopefully i'll be finished ready for Monday. (including oil and filters etc.)  It's been a real blast this month. I had to hire a minibus to get everyone to my daughters choral concert in Limoges. Good job we both work from home and cycle a lot!

Cheers

L

Crank seal done. Only issue was that the bottom threads on the seal casting were smaller than the original sump bolts! That was a bit frustrating when you are trying to refit the sump with your 11 yr old!

Clutch/DMF arrived today. Might even get rolling during the w/e. Still hoping to get our camping holiday but i will need to be pretty happy with the car before trekking across half of France.  ???
