erratic clutch pedal, does not return, at random
« on: February 10, 2018, 09:27:45 AM »
Galaxy 54 plate, TDI 130; clutch pedal works normally most of the time but sometimes does not return.  Pedal almost stuck on the floor with only a few cm of travel.  Engaging gear is difficult.  Then problem disappears again for miles, or even a few days.  Any ideas?

Master or slave cylinder failing/leaking/losing pressure, causing it to stick?
Have you checked for leaks or if the car is losing brake/clutch fluid in the reservoir?
Sometimes the master doesn’t even leak, and it just needs replacing.

Mark, Thanks for your reply.  Wouldn't that cause a more continuous loss of clutch?  I am not having to pump it or lift it to revive it.  It just starts working again.

Give it a good bleed first see if that helps, moisture in brake fluid can cause issues when car gets hot.

OK.  Thanks.  Will do that as a first step.  I have seen other posts saying moisture can remain in the slave cylinder after bleeding system unless you repeat it three or four times.  Do you think that's right?

Never known that the moisture is attracted to the fluid as it’s hygroscopic so a good bleed out will flush it through.

Just have an assistant to help you out, I.e they push down then you close bleeder, they pull pedal up then you open bleeder ready for them to push pedal down. Repeat this until fluid coming through is fresh.

Not sure if you are aware but the brake res is a nightmare to fill up,I used a clean funnel with a length of hose pipe attached to it to get fluid in to the res.

Hi.

I unclip and remove the air intake duct behind the airbox and disconnect the MAF lead which gives a bit more room. And the engine cover. I just broke the lower air intake clip yesterday as they are brittle when over clamped without the proper tool!
