Foam/bubbles in coolant tank 2002 pdi
« on: December 23, 2015, 12:22:37 PM »
anyone else had this or know how to fix it ?? . recently my 2002 tdi galaxy has been playing up coolant wise .
if i look at the header tank after a run the tank is full of foam bubbles , no oil/water mixing anywhere and had a sniffer test done and the head gasket is fine . i've topped it up and left the cap off till all the bubbles/foam are gone and left the cap off with engine on idle from cold to release any air while revving engine at about 1500 k reves for 10 mins replaced cap and after say 40 miles it's back to foam inside the tank , when i remove cap pressure released and coolant went from empty to tp just under max on it's own when pressure was released which is a bit odd as it does this if driven then left overnight and i look at coolant level in morning it says empty, when i undo the cap it fills back up when pressure is released ??? any ideas ?? frown emoticon

Check the restrictor in small bleed off pipe to header tank is not blocked first, small plastic pill think inserted in pipe should have a fine hole in it. Run a 2mm drill bit down it.
Failing that I would say head gasket pressurising system as that's what mine did.
Is it AUY 115bhp diesel?

It's the pipe from expansion bottle to T piece that's clipped to battery surround. About half way down you will see/feel a bulge use some wd40 to lube and push it out with a screwdriver then drill the hole out with 2mm drill bit.

And by sound of it you have AUY engine they are prone to head gasket failure. For some reason over time bolts stretch causing decrease in head to block pressure, exactly same happened to mine usually only gasket and does not warp head.
Read a lot of people with golfs etc tightened bolts by quarter of a turn and resolved problem.
As I intend keeping mine I didn't bother with doing that and instead had the head off.

The same thing happened to me! I used a long sharp pointy thing on that plastic grommet in the return pipe, and it's been fine since! Good luck.
