ford galaxy 1.9 TD shivers
« on: September 23, 2018, 03:14:37 PM »
My ford galaxy reg 03,  1.9 TD has not run smoothly as it always has been.  It started yesterday, the car start shivering as soon as I start it. And it is worse when it runs on 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.  It only shivers for the first 10 to 15 seconds and then smooth out. It keeps doing this, as soon as I slow down or speed up and changed to different gear. Also it does not accelerate as it used to when I press the accelerator. Is it a clutch or fuel issue?

What sort of shivering are you experiencing?

Does it feel like engine is struggling or is it more of a vibration?

Could be dual mass flywheel shaking or an issue with engine running.

Need a bit more info on what is actually happening

Maybe you have a misfire caused by either faulty injector, injector wiring loom?

it is more of vibration with louder noise than before. the engine doesn't run smooth and doesn't pick itself up when I press the accelerate. I have recorded couple of clips, 7 seconds each to show what is happening, but enable to upload them   as they are bigger then the allowed size in this forum even if I zip them. can email them if you provide me with an email address please

Videos you can upload to You Tube then paste the link on here.

Do you have VCDS? scan of the engine module would be good.

took the car to my local garage  for a scan. the code number is 18074 and it said valve for pump-injector cylinder 1 - intermittent. the guy said he is fairly confident it is the injector faulty. however, the car behave very normal when the engine is hot (i.e when the temp indicator between 50-90c  . also some time it behave well even when the engine is called for few minutes.
if it is the injector any idea of the price for supply and fit and how long it takes. I am rather surprise to find out the  injectors for this engine are under the cam cover.

Also could even be the loom as they are known to cause issues, loom about £50-60 I think.

I had the same issue, again as mentioned before injector loom. If it is the actual injector itself, it would have symptoms prior to trowing a code on those PDs and will be notable on cold starts, it will miss and smoke then and you will get no fault codes. As it gets worse in high gear if you put your foot down and the injector really is gone it will shiver then, but then it trows a different code in that case I can't remember the exact one..

all, many thanks for taking the time to help. I understand it more the loom then the injector. I am tempted to order the loom from the link that Chris posted. is it easy to replace?

You will need a quarter drive socket set to get the cam cover off as there is one bolt that's difficult to reach, or remove EGR valve.
I also removed the battery and unclip the battery fuse box and remove single bolt in battery tray to move partition over.

When pulling the plug from each injector refit it to into it's clip (look at the way the new loom plugs are clipped, this makes it easier when removing the old loom.

There are two types of rocker gaskets on the PD, one is discontinued and you need the whole new type rocker cover in order to fit the new type on, otherwise it will leak. There are no gaskets available for the early type of cover. Which year is yours? Sometimes you might be able to reuse the gasket if you clean it and torque it correctly with a dab a sealant only on the edges. 038103483D is the p/n of the latter one and that is available on ebay and probably most motor factors cheaply. I had this problem and had to buy a second hand rocker cover to solve it. There was a leaflet with the new gasket by victor reinz that explained this. If that's the case with yours a second hand cover will solve this, it fits from all VAG PDs but you need to note the orientation of the crankcase ventilation breather when buying. I thing I got mine of a passat.

You will generally find they will leak if they have been on there a while and you then disturb them. Theres 3 different ones i can see on eurocarparts, it might be worth putting your reg into their site to see if it offers you a single option (assuming your looking for a UK registered vehicle of course, if not then you probably need to identify your engine code and go from there)

https://www.eurocarparts.com/car-gasket-seals

Even if you don't end up using them it might let you identify the right one.

When I did my head I used the gasket that came in the kit bout it leaked, turns out the gasket on early type was discontinued as the covers distort causing uneven clamping force. I got a 2nd hand cover and fitted a new gasket off eBay. As above I think it was off a Passat awx engine as PCV orientation was the same.

You might get lucky by cleaning and adding a dab of sealant where it meets the cam caps, make sure you remove when cold and gradually slacken bolts in spiral patten like you would head bolts.

You can reuse the gasket if not too old and it wont leak, just get a torque wrench and torque it by hand then to 10nm starting from the middle outwards and use a dab of sealant on the cam caps on the edges of the gasket. But you need to clean very well the gasket and the mating surface on the head. That applies to fitting a new one anyway, but if your old one is not too burned and brittle from the heat it will work, cleaning the sealant off it will be hard I use a kitchen sponge. You need to clean very well around the end cam caps from any sealant left and also around the new 0 ring seal of the wiring loom. On that seal I recommend you use a bit of engine oil and not sealant. When you put the new loom in, clean the connectors of the injectors using contact cleaner or some compressed air. Get rid of the oil and residue in there.  All in all a very easy job.
