ford galaxy 2005 2005 222, 000 miles?
« on: December 30, 2015, 11:41:52 PM »
Hi,

New to this forum.

I'm looking at buying a ford galaxy one I have seen is a 2005, cheapish. But it has 222,000 miles on the clock,  would this put you people off?, I have no idea what I'm looking for in these cars any known  faults  would be good to know.

Thanks very much lee

The PD engines used in the TDI can run to enormous mileages if looked after, so I would take the general condition of the vehicle and how well it's been maintained as a better gauge of if it's worth buying. They do have their share of problems, some of the common issues are listed here. Have a good check for rust, especially on the sills (check for damage to the sill also where many ill trained people jack them up when they shouldn't), and just be aware that due to the high mileage there's more chance of something going wrong simply because it's all had a lot of use by now. But if it's in decent condition and appears to have been cared for then it could still be worth buying.

I currently have three galaxy's.

My Manual MK2 has 223k Although the engine had a head gasket go and subsequently dropped a valve but I replaced the engine with a second hand one.  The car itself is in good nick I have had it from new and fully expect to get 300K out of it.

My Auto MK2  I just got with  173k on the clock - and is going fine.

My MK1 Manual has 163K on the clock and again I have had this from new ( 1997) so if your car is in good nick then 220K is not too much!

Hi.

Thanks very much for your help.

At the min im looking for a ford galaxy, and i have two in mind which i have seen.  Dont know which one to pick.

First one
1999
123000 miles
good serivce history
got a tow bar fitted so may have had a carvan on at some point or trailer.
from pictures body looks good and same on the inside
mot till 6/ 2016

Second one
2005
222000 miles
dont think it has any serivce history
from pictures again looks good few dints in body, and clean on inside
mot till 12/2016.

Thought please.

The car is for my mum, shese not a up to date person, lol so it dont have to be fancy, just need some thin that will last as she dont have much money, she always wanted one of these cars years ago, and now i want her to get one also, as i ride motorbikes rounds race tracks and this car will fit a bike in nice lol.

Thanks
lee

I'd be reluctant to buy a vehicle of that mileage with no record of servicing and maintenance unless it was very obvious from it's general condition that it had been cared for (but then if it had been looked after you would expect the previous owners to have kept good records of work done). I bought mine having done 83k, it had a few receipts but not a full history, though in any case I ended up changing the oil, coolant, brake fluid, timing belt (and water pump) and all filters after buying it for my own peace of mind. Also, make sure you get more than one key 'cos it ain't cheap to buy and programme replacements!

As above I don't consider that mileage a problem if its been cared for, how many owners has it had? Generally the more owners it has had can be a sign of underlying trouble or poorer servicing.

Have you checked its MoT history? You can do that for free now on any vehicle which should give you a clue as to the way its been looked after and how that mileage has been accrued.

I would be wary of past MoT's that have lots of defects, lots of silly advisories and/or lots of recurring advisories indicating the issue(s) haven't been addressed.

Thanks very much for your help,

Going to go for the 1999 modle one, this has got loads of bills and history with it and had few things done like timing belt and few bits like that a bit ago.

Thanks very much

Hi,

Well did a 3hr round trip today, to look and buy the 1999 ford, but got there, didnt like the car, said was no rust, was few rust bits, inside was dirty, not even cleaned it for selling,

Also bloke had a few cars for sale, all pictures taken on same street  but looked and was not his street shit hole lol.

Didnt like it i dint even fire the car up,.

So still on the look out for a ford galaxy if any one knows one for sale, has to be a auto price up to 1200 tops

Be aware that alot of these Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra's are used as taxis so it is probable that a high mileage one was an ex-taxi and would have been used daily for long hours. Stay away in that case.

Also you should mention what sort of price you are paying for the two cards you have seen so people on here can give proper advice. My 2003 MK2 Galaxy tdi Ghia (owned for 10 years) has 156K mileage on it and I reckon it's only worth about 1000-1500 so a 200K+ car would be worth less than 800 imo.
