Ford galaxy sump replacement
« on: February 02, 2015, 06:43:43 PM »
Hey there. Was wondering if anyone could tell me what sort of job it is to replace a engine oil sump on a 2005 mk2 1.9 tdi galaxy?  Apart from the sealant etc, is it a big job. Does the gearbox have to come off etc? Many thanks :)

why are you changing it ???

damage or threads pulled out ??

if its thread stripped out, buy a spark plug helicoil kit as its same thread.  I done mine a few years back and its still happy as a pig in..........    has had 2 oil changes every year so it isn't being treated easily.

Welcome!

Nope, the gearbox doesn't have to come off to replace it, so it's not too bad a job but if you buy a pattern part be careful what type you get- some have the drillings for the oil level sensor on the bottom which IIRC isn't used on the later model Mk2's, I've also read that not all aftermarket sumps have the holes drilled out for the intercooler boost pipe support bracket on the side either. For further reading relating to this, take a read of this thread or this one for example.

If it's because you've stripped the sump plug thread personally I'd attempt a helicoil first but that's just me.

The first link is from when I did mine.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was lucky in that I could leave the car for a couple of days, just to be sure it cured properly.  When refitting my son helped line it up, and held it in place to make sure it didn't move while I nipped up the first two bolts.  The bead thickness seemed about right as it only just squeezed a small amount out when tightened.

...still sorting out the divorce though!! (still amicable, though not as amicable as it was!)

Brilliant thank you guys! It's actually because it has been impact damaged, the threads have been chewed and the heli coil has given up too apparentlys and also I wanna check the strainer too so I think it was best to be done with it. It's actually my uncles car and I haven't looked at it yet but I am lucky enough that I have access to a ramp as I am a mechanic and can take it to my work:) but yeah wasn't too sure what path to take and whether or not to do it so thanks very much :) and yeah for added info I will be going direct to ford for the sump so shouldn't be an issue :) thanks again!
