Title: Front strut top mounts

I have no unusual noises or anything like that but have noticed the top nut and cup are heavily rusted. So is it worth trying to remove and change them or just leave well alone?

If you have no other problems with front suspension components, then it's best left alone, as it doesn't actually bear any weight.
Make sure it's dry, then smear some silicone grease or similar around the cup and nut to prevent it from getting worse, and maybe cover the cup - I've heard some people fit a disposable rubber glove over it to keep it from collecting water.
Leave the struggle until you actually need to remove it.

I was thinking it looks a nightmare to get it undone as it's very rusty,so drying it out and protecting from further water sounds like a good plan to me.

I gave mine a good spray with WD40 the last time I had the scuttle out to change the pollen filter, and will do the same again this time! Shame they didn't manufacture a drain hole in the cap to stop the water from gathering there, I suppose you could always drill your own!

I would rather cover it then drill a hole, the water running out will go onto the bearing brace which won't be ideal!
I forget the exact model (think its a polo) but the newer VW's use rubber pieces to cover the back of the headlights and one of them fits perfectly over the top of the strut :)

I was just about to post a question re. the top mount on the front suspension.
Experiencing a 'roughness' and possibly knocking(although not 100% it's from here) and suspect the top mount on the passenger(near side) suspension.
I made a video of the movement. There is a little slack, maybe 1cm when moved up and down. There isn't any movement on the drivers side.

Niall, a bit of up and down is normal with the wheel off, its designed that way. Ask any MOT tester☺☺. Put the weight of car back on wheels and it locks up ,after all e dont drive with wheels in the air.
Yours looks fine to me but hard to tell really on vid

Dunno , all i know is if you lift then up and take the wheels off, front struts are supposed to drop down thru mounting plates a bit
There is even special instructions to MOt testers regarding this

I bought an aerosol of waxoyl and filled up the cups with wax.

When I changed the top mounts some years later it all came apart no problem. So probably one of the easiest bits of preventative maintenance you can do, very easy when replacing the pollen filter.
