Galaxy 2005 tdi 130 fuel pump relay
« on: January 10, 2020, 02:32:30 PM »
Has anyone experience of error code 17932: Fuel Pump Relay (J17) Open or Short to Ground: P1524? Symptoms were a pop/fizzing sound as I was driving followed immediately by loss of power, presumably limp mode. I've accessed the relays (underneath the fuses) but can't find anywhere online telling me which one is the fuel pump relay. Any experiences of this error woudl be appreciated, thanks.

This will hopefully help - Tis only shows upto mid 2003 on the Galaxy range for me, but hopefully its the same.

Supposedly its K4 but its unclear which one of them is for the Diesel engine. It looks like your looking at the back or lower panel at least. Probabbly the one on the far lefthand side on the longest row (as the others are marked as Dohc for the 4 cyl petrols, and for the v6, but that one isn't marked)

Thank you brianh. The relay boards inside my car look slightly different layout from your attachment so I guess they changed between 2003 and 2005? I tested the relay that was nearest the position of the K4 you mention anyway and it seems good.

Thank you johnnyroper. Yes, I'd seen that thread and it helped me to access the relays. I pulled relay 103 and tested, and it seems fine. I'm beginning to fear wiring may be the problem rather than the relay. Since I posted I've found the user manual that came with the car and it has a key to the relays - see the attachment. According to that the relay marked 103 corresponds to R24 in the manual which is glow plugs. Looking at the key in the manual (attached) I assumed R3 "fuel pump shut-off" was the one I want. I tested that and it was fine.

Looking at that it appears r22 is the one you want as it says fuel supply 1.9tdi engines

Sadly thats as far forward as my copy of TIS goes, but at least you've found your answer now.

How are you testing the relay? It might be worth putting a fused jumper (easiest way to do this safely is to put an inline fuse holder with a suitable spade connector on the wires, and an appropiate rated fuse in the holder) across the load pins on the relay socket. They can appear ok on a multimeter, but fail when asked to provide a load.

Or swap it with another one of the same part number if there is one in the fusebox

Otherwise your into lifting the rear carpet to get into the access hatch above the tank. Working from the rear righthand door its not too major to get in there and see if anything is getting to the pump, though if you can avoid doing so its preferred.

Thanks, I'll try testing the relays that way - I had just been using a multimeter.

Would also advise you have a look around the fusebox near the battery if you haven't already done so (looking for signs of melting or burning once you open the top). Would expect a fizzing or popping would have resulted in burnt relay and you'd smell it when digging about in there, You haven't mentioned it, so can only assume its not there. Could be a bad solder joint you heard maybe giving up the ghost, but the fuel pump one isn't known for doing that.
