heater blower {again }
« on: November 22, 2013, 09:54:45 AM »
hi guys. ok so ive got fed up of been cold so i decided to get a auto electrician out to look at the heater blower in the car.its a mk1 galaxy tdi..........the guy was booked yesterday to come and look at the car in which he rang me later in the day to say he could,nt come till today so i said yeah ok. he turned up today n wasnt here five minutes and said that the display was fooked. its the aircon model. when i turned round and said what you guys had said about the display flashing and logging a fault he looked at me puzzled and said he was going to price up a display unit for it. i kind of get the feeling he aint going to ring me back. could it be the display faulty? cheers guys  8-)

You paid him for that???

In short, no. The display itself isnt faulty, there is a very remote chance the controller its attached to has a fault but much more likely the fault is with an attached component. A flashing panel means it has a fault code logged - the fact he didnt know that is a very good reason to tell him to shove off

Hi Dave
Reading back on your old posts you was going to get your own VCDS lead did you do that?
This can be very helpful when trying to diagnose faults, or what part of the world are you in, maybe one of us can help.

hey guys. :) yeah the first bloke turned up. was there five mins then left but didnt charge me. so i rang another and he turned up and checked the power from the fuse box. checked the resistor pack and motor which was all fine. he said the display was not getting power to the motor wiring and needed replacing. kind of get the feeling im about to waste £40 quid on a new display that aint going to cure it. again he looked puzzled when i mentioned the logged code thing. he said that dont sound right.as for the vcds and cable. ive got it on my laptop and have a cable but when my car got the gearbox replaced the guy in the garage tryed to reset the abs light on the dash as he did,t know it was on when it went in. when i picked the car up he asked if the light was on and i said yes. he said that he tryed to reset it but the diagnostic socket was dead so could,nt. because of this ive never used the vcds or lead till yesterday. i looked up online which was the 12v power for the socket and put 12v to it to run vcds lite..... i aint got the full version...... i ran it yesterday before the guy turned up and it found 4 faults but couldnt rest them because i didnt have the full version. how ever...... i did manage to reset the abs light lol.i cant remember what the faults said exacatly but i can rerun it aint let you guys know. you can probably make more sence of it than me lol. when i ran vcds it stopped halfway through and brought up a box saying sorry you need the full version to carry on. as for location im in billingham in the northeast.

On the free version you need to scan the modules individually by selecting them. As you have found the autoscan doesn't run through everything.
I suggest you scan the engine, auxiliary heater and HVAC. Save any fault codes then clear them. See if any reoccur immediately, and again after song the car. Then report back the results for diagnosis by the experts (probably not me!)

ICI billingham ah yes remember thats a bit to far away for me.

But now you said about no power to the diagnostic I think your on to something there.
I recall you had wet carpets some time ago, am wondering if you have the dodgy splice joint under the carpet to the side of the passenger seat/footwell, have a look for a bunch of wires I think red and white (sorry can't check diagrams at the mo) poorly joined together with a bit of tape.
The damp from the wet carpet can corrode this joint, this may be your problem.

yes ive still got soggy carpets lol. i do recall a bunch of wires under the trim. i removed this when my rear wiper washer pipe had come adrift. well i went to the scrappy to see if the display unit was the same type and ask the guy if i could see if i could plug it in n see if it worked but it turned out to be a mk2 or maybe a 3 so no good. as for the corroded joints under the carpets ill look into that later. at the min im just getting my 12v feed from the stereo wiring as ive removed it while i try and suss the heating :) >silverbeast i take it youve had this issue with yours? if so can you remember what individual modules have to be scanned? i havent looked up the instructions to do it so was just guessing. i,ll see if i can find the instructions and redo it. every now and again.......today been one of them lol. i heard this strange whiring noise from the rear of the car.when i got out and looked under the passenger side rear of the car it sounded like the aux heater was trying to work. i just want heating lol. ;D

There are instructions? .. I just play it by ear (well mouse finger!)

Under "Select Control Module" do scans on
01-Engine (If engine temperature sensor is wrong it can mess up firing up Auxiliary Heater)
08-Auto HVAC ( Pretty sure this is Heating Ventialation Air Control - never used it much as it had always worked on mine, this is where I would expect any errors to be logged)
18-Aux Heat (This is the one I've used most and if yours isn't working I expect you will have errors logged)

Just had a look at the wiring diagram there should be about six wires sliced together (S230 in TIS) fed from fuse 19 in the central box this supplies data link connector pin 16 12 volt +. Heater display, central locking etc, there was a picture on the other site of this joint before and after but cant open anything on there search box at the moment.

By the way if you do scan module 18 aux heater you wont get any response as the MK1's heater is not connected to the diagnostics unlike the MK2@s

cheers all. 8-) im going to run vcds again tomorrow if i have time and see what codes it throws at me. how do i post the results on the forum? im assuming fuse 19 has 12v to it then as my central locking works.bet its the wires under the carpet as its somped at the min. >:( i just keep soaking it up till i can stop it leaking. i,ll have to sort the front wipers out soon anyways as i think its starting to seize  as its getting slow in operation.

Vcds allows you to print your codes, you can the scan them into your computer and attach.
Or just type all the relevant information.

(i) Save codes in VCDS.
(ii) Find file it's stored them in and open in Notepad.
(iii) Select bits you want and copy
(iv) Paste them into post.
