What engine/ gearbox do you have? If it's a 6 speed manual as fitted to the TDI's, the Parts diagram (http://eucatparts.com/?action=cat_ford_part&s_id_part=24891&s_id_model=99&s_code_image=C002143503) (number 22) suggests it's at the rear of the gearbox above and behind where the driver's side (on right hand drive vehicles) driveshaft emerges from the gearbox.

The easiest place to grab the VSS signal is at the back of the radio. There is a yellow plug which (unless you have the multifunction steering wheel) will only have the one wire on it, which is the VSS signal.

Curious to know though, what function of a car alarm requires it know the speed of the vehicle?

Wonder if it's one of them ones that will allow engine to run say on a cold morning but as soon as vehicle moves cuts engine out unless you have a fob with you?

I had a non flagging fault in my 2003 TDI automatic Ford Galaxy, the speedometer would fluctuate radically at speed and the automatic transmission would go into limp mode.  Diagnostic test showed no fault.  I located the vss directly under the oil filter. To remove it takes a 12 point #10 socket. You can remove it from the top I imagine however I removed the engine - transmission protection cover under the car and did it from there.  There is an 0 ring at the base of the vss so it take a little twisting to set it free. The tip of the sensor has a magnetic rectangle bit, mine had little bits of metal shavings attached.  I have it a wipe down, put a little oil on the 0 ring and made sure it didn't touch any breeder on its way back in. So far everything is fine with speedo and transmission. I tried starting the car with the vss hanging out, it just turned over would not fire. I don't know if it has a fault indication but am convinced this may be the problem plaguing many a Ford, Seat and Vw family vans and TDI's in general.

That's the crank sensor not vss,the cam sensor can also cause non starting issues.
