Hi

Is the 1.9 the same gearbox in the 2.8 V6?

Mine wont go into 3rd a lot of the time, especially when it is hot and dry weather it seems, god knows why.

Would it be worth changing the oil? How many miles has said gearbox done please? Could be some worn out cogs or linkages perhaps?
I drive a Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi which has 115bhp and an automatic gearbox.

Hi

The car has done Ł125k miles

I took it into a VAG service specialist who changed the oil and filter for a totally unreasonable amount of money.

I have an intermittent fault with the gearbox going into 3rd gear, it stays stuck between 2nd and 3rd on down shift will reselect second. Occasionally can down select then will grab on upselect, but normally have to stop put it into reverse then that will cure the fault.

I have noticed it didnt happen all winter but the onset of hotter drier weather and it returns.

Friday evening in a 20 mile journey had to do the gear tango 4 times, late Friday night it rained, Saturday late morning same journey in reverse not a single incident.

It is a great car maybe a little thirsty on Petrol but we like it

Thank you

Marcus

Sticking solenoids, not much else ever goes wrong with that autobox. Look in the reference library for details.

Indeed, that would be my theory too.

I would suggest taking it to a specialist gearbox garage and hopefully they can get it back on the road again.

Probably a bit too fiddly to do without a ramp and suchlike.

Also like you I am always wary of specialist because they do charge a lot and often aren’t any better than the generalist garages in my experience. One VW specialist I went to told me my car had a DPF and it doesn’t.

Hi Marcus,

I have a 2003 Auto TDi and I had a problem with the car sticking in gears. I asked the guys on the forum and Mirez sent me his guide. I ordered 4 new solenoids from a US company - they arrived, I fitted them and the gearbox has been perfect since then - with 195 K on the clock.

It's fiddly but not beyond the average home mechanic. You do need ramps and a few tools but nothing fancy.

Hi all sorry

I have been unable to come on here for a while for a number of reasons but we will be doing the gearbox very soon I love that car, the kids even make up songs about it, sad I know.

Thank you for your advice  I think you are right and those solenoids are the problem, can I ask what US company you got the solenoids from bigjeeze?

It was at the Garage for a few weeks while he looked at the problem i went to pick it up today and we got some codes for the first time

Attached below

I am not sure if this is the same ones as mentioned before or another solenoid elsewhere, but a useful reading none the less

This is a great forum, thank you all

Will let you know how it goes

Edit

Sorry a bit thick tonight so just followed the thread Bigjeeze and saw your ebay link, thank you.

It looks like I just need these three solenoids,

Unless the error code means i need another of course.

Thanks once again  Mirez, and for that brilliant how to guide. SirDavidAlhambra and Bigjeeze

Marcus

Hopefully you will change those solenoids and get that lovely family car of yours back on the road very soon! Those cars do become a family asset after a while, they bring us so much joy and memories of lovely family days out, I can quite understand why your kids love the car so much!

We have fond names for our Alhamb and I do sometimes sing about it. Mind you, I also had a Peugeot 405 about 20 years ago which I also used to sing about in a very different way. In particular I remember trying to change the brake discs while swearing along to “The Wizard” by Paul Hardcastle (used to be the theme tune from Top of the Pops - https://youtu.be/VNxzsUWBwz8). My wife thought I had gone literally nuts and actually called my parents to speak with them about me. I told her that dam car was driving me nuts. We got a Mondeo after that and all was well again.

Have a read of this thread > https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-vw-sharan-seat-alhambra/galaxy-1-9-auto-chunking-through-the-gears-since-oil-change/msg14045/#msg14045 (found using N283 in the search page at the top of the forum) theres a diagram in the post by Chris there showing which one is at fault by the readout above.

For what its worth, most of the folk here use VCDS for diagnostics, even the free version with a cheap eBay cable is adequate for most purposes and will return fault codes from all the systems on the car except the Ford petrol engines (not including the v6 that you've got, that should work on vcds). If you have a laptop already, its worth getting a cable if you have problems so you don't need to take it there to have codes read.
