Introducing myself (PoloGT) and some questions.
« on: May 20, 2016, 01:29:06 PM »
Hi guys (and perhaps girls),

I'll use this post to introduce myself and ask a question because i didn't find a special place to introduce myself. If I have missed it. Please let me know.

I'm Roel from the Netherlands and I recently purchased a 2.3 Galaxy ghia LPG from 2001.
Everything fitted as the ghia should have. I wasn't searching for a galaxy but it came on my path and with all the options and comfort.... Why not?!... Especially for the asking price the seller asked....

After using it two weeks I'm loving the space and comfort and getting used to driving with what people keeping calling a battleship (directly after asking if there's a new child coming... Haha)

The car was cheap because it has and had its flaws.
Most of them I repaired or am waiting parts to repair.
I like to get my hands dirty on these things. Normally I work on old version polo's (hence my nickname)
The last thing I ordered at ford is a new remote key and new doorhandles (inside) because they look awful. A common problem as far is a read online.

For now one question is really bugging me.
In the frond I fitted a 2-din radio with dvd.
Of course it doesn't work together with the visteon system inside from which only the screens and the remote remain.
I prefer to put a separate DVD player in the back so the kids can watch something else then I listen to while driving.
For this I, as far as I can find online, I need to get the system to think that the other components (radio and dvd or vhs player) are still installed.
This works by installing a contact 12v cable to the existing wiring loom for the screens under the middle console.
That is at least necessary to find out if the system even works...

The only thing I can't seem to find is which cable (color) Under the middle console I should connect to the 12v cable that tells that the ignition is on.

Can anyone help me with this information or perhaps the wiring diagram for the visteon system?

Soon I'll post some pictures of the car.  ;)
(Of course only if you guys want)

Greets,

Roel

I had same issue with mine had dvd in back but changed head unit so lost the 12v feed to turn Visteon on.
If I remember correctly the white wire on Visteon unit is the feed from head unit and it then changes to blue and red when at iso plug behind radio.
Like I said from memory but can whip my radio out tomorrow and confirm colour of wires.
I do know it was in either the yellow or green plugs on rear or radio so simple to continuity check them back to Visteon unit, and once confirmed correct wire connect it to the 12v output on your head unit

Fantastic. Thanks for the help!

So it's the white cable that turns into a mixed blue and red cable in front behind the iso plug for the radio.

Great. That helps a lot

A confirmation by checking your radio would be fantastic.
I hope to find some time today to open everything up and check this all.
And of course: I hope that after this the screens jump on without a problem.

I guess the quality is not HD though... ;D ;D ;D

But switching everything to better quality image is not for now. First I want everything working and enjoy the galaxy for a while.

Yes I am fairly sure it was white at Visteon unit and blue/red at head unit.Mrs is out in car at present so will have a look later for you. If you look at yours before I get a chance to check mine just use multimeter and check continuity from Visteon to radio wiring in green and yellow plugs.

No it's not HD quality Lol but it's ok for the kids to be occupied.

Once you get a dvd in back it's simple to connect with phono leads, mine has a remote also so kids can have control over it and it only runs on headphones.

There's no better time as the present (not sure if my girlfriend agrees as I went outside to look).
But there's no blue with red or red with blue cable behind the front radio....

Not at the iso connector and not at the other connector (a three colored connector from ford that is also there).

So more searching is required I guess.

I'll wait your misses to be back. Thanks already  ;D

Yes. The kids will have nothing to complain. It's not as if they are used to a DVD player in the back with better quality. So it's always a step up.
And me not needing to listen to the sound is a great bonus.

I'll install a media player instead of a dvd player by the way.
Smaller, easier to stow away, no skipping of the dvd and most important: somewhere in the attic there is one flying around. Now I only need to find out where....  ::)

No more steps made.
I tried to remove the middle console but couldn't get it lose from the hand brake. Haven't figured out how to do so without damaging the fabric...

Looked again behind the radio but couldn't find the right cable. This would be the easiest solution. But until now no red/blue cable.

Meanwhile I have a more urgent question.
Yesterday it took longer for the automatic transmission to go into drive after starting. It felt like it was thinking...
After driving a minute I tried again but didn't find it again.
Could this be because of a lack of transmission oil?

I found a drop of oil coming from the connection to the drive shaft going to the right wheel...
I guess there's a ring there that needs changing.
Is that difficult to do and is there a perhaps a how-to?
I didn't find it until now.

I hope some one can help me out. I hope it's nothing serious...

Cleaned the gearbox. No new drops.
No problems whatsoever after the one time so for now I'll let it be.

Back to the stereo.
Looking for the mysterious cable.
Until now: nothing.

Googling gives me different cables then on pictures...

Made a picture. Perhaps someone can help.
It seems I had the navigation in the car once..
Hence the ISO plugs. After digging in the back I found more cables... But what is what?!

And how come the white and red plug? Is that original.

Additionally: I found some suggestions online that using the iso leads to lesser quality of sound because of some additional sound support in the car. But I couldn't find out why...

Any help would be appreciated. For now I'm stuck

So sorry I totally forgot to check mine before. Done it just the red with blue tracer is the switched for Visteon unit. It is the one in yellow plug. The blue thin one in other pic is only other plug the navi had which standard ones don't.

If you have the Visteon it would have left factory with navi as it was part of the multi media pack I believe.

The red and white in your pic are for video I think probably been linked to Visteon to run from an aftermarket head unit with dvd.
The black multiplug is the same as blue one in my pic just with rest of plug on,I think it is a ground and 2 sensor wires for nav unit.

Found it. On to the next ....

Your blue and red is red and white in mine ....
Plugged it to 12v and the screens worked.

Yes.

So. Search further.

As far as I found someone got creative on the original cable. So in the back I found  two white, two red and a yellow. As far as I guess. One set goes to the screens. One set to the stereo. Plus the yellow to the screens. ...

But no time anymore today.

So. The story continues.

Many thanks for your help!!!!

Let's hope the after market cables work...

Sounds similar to how mine was, someone had run audio leads from phono plugs on dvd up to an fm modulator behind head unit there was a relay and a switch in dash along with roof aerial. Idea being when passengers in back watched a DVD driver flicked switch and volume came out the speakers.
I ripped the lot out connected DVD to the Visteon audio and video leads so it works like original set up.

If you take quarter panel trim out you will see the original Visteon wiring harness,it should have a white label on it. From memory it has left and right audio and video leads with phono plugs on. And then there is earth, perm live and switched feed for the DVD unit.

The after market cables are mostly in the back.
The image works. Only through the after market cables... Sound also works but with a lot of interference from the engine...
The aftermarket cables work on vhs channel on the screens.

The original cables, at least I think they are, don't give a signal to the screens until now. I'll search further. Because those perhaps don't give the sound interference...

The image quality is pretty good by the way for a 15 year old system by the way. I'm happy with that.

You need to get centre console out to access Visteon unit so you can see if wiring has been chopped in to there for aftermarket system.

Basically the Visteon has its own wiring loom between rear of car and unit in console, well mine does anyway.
Best bet is to rip out the aftermarket stuff and reconnect the factory wiring in my opinion. Sounds like someone has done a right lash up of a job,the sound should come through the headphone sockets via the Visteon control box. So long as the control box is working it should not be that much of a job to reinstate correctly once you have located wiring and got rid of aftermarket stuff

Johnny,

I guess I'm lucky. Everything looks like it has been done really professionally. I just don't understand what they did....
But then again. I'm no professional.

After playing with all the cables I got everything to work.
Image through the after market cables. The sound through the original vhs cables. Somehow image through the original cables doesn't work. Sound does...
Sound comes through the centre console from Visteon. And no background noise anymore. So. Besides using a different cable everything now works as it should.

So I'll leave it as it is. No one will notice the difference.
Ill just risk making things worse when trying to restore the original state. Who knows why they made this 'repair' in the first place.

So.

Final challenge: Find a media player 12v with the possibility to connect  it to the 12v ignition (while keeping its Memory)

I reckon the original video leads are disconnected at Visteon and replaced with aftermarket ones?

With mine the lash up wiring was because they removed vhs and fitted a cd/DVD changer unit but rather than connect directly in place of vhs decided on an extra roof aerial, modulator and a relay controlled with dash switch to get sound through speakers. Don't see why personally as I prefer kids being able to watch their stuff while I can have radio/cd on.

I dare say there will be a 12 volt media player suitable for in car use available from somewhere,so long as it has the phono audio and video outputs it should work through the Visteon controller and screens.

Johnny,

Luckily the original setup was preserved.
Just some cables were added I guess.

Today the cables where put through the side of the car to get them under de front seat. So giving me control of what is played on the media player.
Today I used the DVD player from my mother and the kids enjoyed watching a movie for the first time...

Sadly my son used the remote and switched the screens from vhs to aux. (don't ask me why)
Result: no image and sound anymore.
And the option vhs is not available... So. Something changed...

What? I don't know.

U guess there will be a signal cable somewhere telling the control unit from visteon that the vhs is connected. Why it worked before I don't know.
The same as with the screens I guess I need to connect something to let the system think the original vhs is there....

Until now working with the system is like a dance....
Two steps forward, one step back.  :D

So. If you know how to get this working to. Please let me know...  ::)

Bit of a strange one by sound of it, mine is set up with earth, perm and ignition feed to changer that do not come from Visteon unit. The only link between changer and Visteon is the audio and video leads.
Trying to think how my screens work,it's been a while since I done it as my daughter usually takes control but I seem to remember getting the option to choose input after pressing power button to turn them on? And once DVD starts playing get the DVD menu.

Hmmm... interesting

Somehow it doesn't recognise the option vhs anymore.
I can only choose aux inside the menu.
Where before I could choose between vhs and aux as long as vhs (DVD) was playing.
I guess there's no other option then tracing back the steps I made the first time. Then hoping:
A. I can get it to work again
B. I can find out at which point it fails again.

It worked before so I'm sure I'll get it working again. I just hope it won't take ro much time  ;D

Check... Somehow they did some things that work but aren't perfect.

The sounds goes through the after market cables.
But the system recognizes if the vhs is there through the old sound cable...
But with the old cable there's no sound....

Haha... Nice.

So. Quick fix. I took a cable splitter and connected the sound cable from the DVD player to the new cable for the sound as well as to the old for the signal.

And now everything works again.  :D

Again. It's not as I would want to do it. But the system is to complex for me to work on so I'll risk damaging more then I fix if I change everything again.

So. I'll leave it at this. everything is behind the back panel so no one will see the difference and it now works as intended

Johnny: thanks for all your help during this process

Hi folks,

I forgot i even had an account here. Which i guess is a good thinking as it means the galaxy ran without problems.
I'm 60.000 km further but now encountered a problem.
My gearbox is giving some issues. Reverse is not taking nicely and one is doing the same while cold. It looks like there's not enough pressure directly after starting. One minute later it's fine.
As I looked underneath I see oil all around the connection of the gear pan of the automatic gearbox.
Which is odd as I had this replaced and the oil cleaned a little more then a year ago.
As I can't imagine it's difficult to change the gasket and put in new oil (in my oldtimer I can rebuild an engine and replace a gearbox etc. so I'm not a complete noob) I'd like to try myself.
Searching I just can't find the type of gearbox to order parts and how to check the oil level.
I'll post a picture in my next message hoping someone can identify the gearbox and explain how to because the instructions I found online are different so I guess they are referring to another type of gearbox.

It also seems that the cap of the small pipe is damaged. Don't know if the pressure could push oil out of there...

Vw helped today. (Ford only sells cars on Saturday, not parts of cars)
They gave the expected code EQT for the gearbox.

It looks the part.

At least now I know why it is leaking. The cap is broken at the filler pipe.
The current one has a part missing. Couldn't see though if that was original as it was really dirty.

Ordered a new one which will come in on Tuesday.

Anyone know how I can check the oil level when refilling?

Google sadly didn't help much

Just to note.

I was suspecting number 23 and the bolt which smartly I'm not showing in the picture....

But underneath the car I don't see that bolt there... just a kind of square. So I'm a bit confused. Perhaps there are differences.

Thanks.

I crawled underneath to car again. It seems there are different pans. My plug was higher up in the back.

As I'm waiting for parts but don't want to kill my gearbox I filled up the system running until it ran over.
Then I closed the cap with three layers of aluminium tape. This way I can find out if this really was the problem before I finally fix it with the correct parts.
Had to add 800 ml.

Running now the gears shift like new with one exception: reverse.
Hopefully this will also improve in time as I guess it is the top gear.
Afterwards it was fine but the engine was warm ad that time.
As I only have problems running when cold I will know tomorrow.
 :)

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for thinking with me.

One week later and after waiting for 90 minutes for the car service next to the highway I hit a new low.

The guy said my air conditioner is broken which results in a burning belt...
I could drive without aircon.

After 90 minutes it turned again but the guy just looked once and decided it's the aircon... 1400,- he said... pff. pump won't turn.

Couldn't resist to try today. Aircon cold in seconds. So. How big are the odds  a broken pump suddenly works again?!
Additionally I can hear a squeaking sound while engine is running. Even with aircon off. To me it sounds more like a guiding wheel or tension wheel so I'll let them check at the garage if no one has a bright suggestion here.

What worries me most is the continued problem with reverse and first gear the first 15 seconds after starting the car. After this the car shifts gears better then ever since I filled the automatic gearbox.
Is ther perhaps a different reason for this then just a gearbox that is getting old? Should I expect the thing to stop functioning soon or can I drive with this the next 100.000 km?
Any suggestions would be great as searching in on the forum didn't help.

Could be a solenoid playing up, theres a couple noted to cause problems by others (n92 i think is the normal one that plays up). Probabbly not a lot you can do about it until it gets worse anyway, might stay working for ages noone can really tell you for sure until you know which bit is the problem.

On the squeaking I'd suggest its either the tensioner pulley or the idler pulley. on the 2.0 the two pulleys are the same (you have to use the mounting bolt etc from the tensioner, but the actual pulley is the same) I'd imagine the 2.3 is the same, haven't had it apart to look as yet. As long as it does it all the time, not just when moving that is.

I'll take it one step at a time.

As I don't have the time I dropped of the galaxy at ford today.
Let's wait and see what they say.
Hoping it's just a pulley.

The solenoid is another story in itself.
If I know the rest is ok I'll talk to a specialist for automatic gearboxes.
I'd like it fixed before it gets to problematic .

I really like the galaxy with all its luxury and would like to drive it for a while more. Especially when the camper thing works out well.

Two steps forward. One step back.

I'm so angry at Ford right now.
Had a problem driving when engine was cold.
It seemed the car didn't go and would stotter. For the first two streets. Then everything was fine. Starting warm: no problem.
As i was at ford they looked at it when fixing the Aircon. End conclusion: it's the gearbox. Needs replacing.

By accident I pushed the throttle while in park. I never do as it is a automatic gearbox.
To my surprise the revs didn't go up. The same as when driving away...
As there is no connection between gearbox and engine in park. Their diagnosis is faulty.... Again.
Tomorrow I'll try to start on LPG directly. Too see if it is petrol related or it's a part used by both...

Any suggestions what I should look at in the meantime? Any usual suspects?

On a positive note.

I finished the wood part of my camper conversion and working on the pillows. Untill now I'm satisfied. When I'm finished I'll post the pictures. As we are going on vacation in a week that won't be long .

I also just ordered privacy shades as part of the conversion. Better then everyone looking in I guess 😁

The throttle on the Manual Galaxy with the petrol engine (at least the early mk2s anyway) is a mechanical cable. It won't usually fail to rev, its the reverse that you get a problem with (not returning to idle properly due to the misseated cable).

Yours might be a fly by wire one as such being automatic, but it would be worth a look. If you use something capable of displaying live data (Torque and a Bluetooth dongle works for this) it may show if the throttle is actually registering anything when you press the pedal.

I've not seen the automatic galaxy to advise further, but checking the throttle itself should be fairly simple if you have someone to assist? There may also be a sensor on the throttle itself if its a cable operated one, if the mechanism moves but the sensor reading doesn't change when the problem occurs I'd suspect the throttle sensor may be causing your issue?

Sadly I tried 3 odbII readers. None of them could read anything. This isn't a cause though as ford could read just fine...

So I need to do without any readings..

Tried to start with LPG. Forcing it cold to skip the petrol phase  could start but couldn't keep it running.
Experienced with LPG it started worse then it should with these warm temperatures.

So could still be anything from the sensor, the throttle body or even something else. Little lost.

Also I found out that on LPG the car runs smoothly. But forcing it back to petrol it runs ok when warm. But smoothly? Not really. It seems to skip a beat once in a while when running stationary...

Could be a sensor. But should rule out the lambda one as it would influence the LPG more then petrol.

If you could see the fuel trims that would help - What can happen with LPG on there is the petrol trims drift, the lpg system adjusts to suit, the petrol trims drift further to compensate and this keeps happening till the trims have hit their max level (25% either way). In this state it might run on lpg, but be awful on petrol. Any idea which lpg system is fitted (I would guess/expect/Hope its some sort of injection system rather than a single point? Has anything been done on the system recently?)

Given you mention the difficult starting do you see this when your driving just on petrol? There are a couple of ways the lpg system can fail and leak gas into the inlet, this can either result in a lack of power/misfires/difficult starting. By running it on petrol for a few miles (at least 10 minutes) and letting the pressure drop off in the gas system you should be able to isolate it to being the car itself, or some sort of problem with the gas side.

I'd try removing the connection from the MAF (airflow sensor just after the filter box) and see if it improves any. This might bring the mil/check engine light on though think that will clear once its reconnected.

To get the diagnostics working you need an adapter which supports SAE j1850 PWM ( I think thats the right one - Sparkypaul can confirm if he see this, If i get chance tomorrow I will give my other reader a try as that will confirm). Not all of the bluetooth adaptors do as its a bit of an oddball one to use. That may be why its not working, equally it may be a setup issue. If your using torque and the car icon doesn't come on then its seeing the adaptor, but not the vehicle, and thats likely to either be the ignition isn't on (should be at II/2), the port doesn't work (you've ruled that out already), or the adapter doesn't support the right protocol.

The odbII I'll look into.
When driving petrol seems fine.

The LPG system is a separate injection system.
The injectors have been replaced but the problems didn't start after that but later.
I'll try the sensor tomorrow but without readings it's like searching gold on the touch 😅

Only other thing i can suggest is to find the vacuum line that runs somewhere between the vapouriser from your lpg system and the inlet manifold, pull it off from the vapouriser (it will be the smallest hose and usually just pushes on) and check it isn't leaking gas down that hose. If it does then you need to replace the diaphragms inside the vapouriser, That will allow unmetered fuel to enter the engine and could cause trims to go very lean, may explain your problems.

You may need to plug the end of the loose hose to keep the engine running (you want it switched to gas whilst you do this). Then either put your finger over the vapouriser outlet, or put a piece of hose onto the nipple and put the other end into a small container of water, if you see bubbles appearing its leaking.

That usually though not always shows up as a problem restarting engine when warm (excessive cranking as it takes a few revolutions to empty enough gas out of the manifold to actually get the engine to start). Equally a leaking injector can cause the same to happen

As the injectors are brand new that wouldn't be my first suspect.
The other part could be. Although it starts like a charm when turning off and on while running on LPG before turning off

Hmm. It's possible your vaporiser guess could be right. I can recreate the problem, although less because the engine is warm, when switching back to petrol at a traffic light. After I drive away. Next traffic light it's running fine.
I just parked at work after running the last part on petrol. If that solves the problem when I start the car I'll do the hose test you suggested. But I'm getting closer I guess.

Your thinking along the right lines there, given the injectors are new but the vapouriser isn't, it may be needing some attention (I've had this failure a couple of times personally, with varied symptoms)

On the plus side a replacement vapouriser or diaphragms for the one you already have, will be much cheaper than a gearbox.

True. Much cheaper. And I can do myself. Sadly. After parking the car driving the last stretch on petrol, it showed exactly the same symptoms...

Do you have the lead to use with the lpg system (there will be a separate plug somewhere on its loom to plug an interface into). If you can get that you might be able to see whats happening with the gas system and should at least be able to see injection timings which might give a clue whats happening. How far was the last stretch? It might need around a mile or so to get rid of excess pressure via a leak, particularly if its a small leak. If you can get access to the vapouriser its worth checking that all the same directly.

Hi Roel

Have you had a look/check on this pipe below

https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-common-faults-and-problems/engine-cutting-out-when-cold/

Its the vacuum pipe for the crankcase ventilation valve, the rubber section deteriorates with age, it's quite well hidden so not easy to see but could be related to your problem.

I can't imagine that's the problem as that problem should exist constantly.. Actually. It should be something mechanical the more I think about it. After starting it seems the hold in. But I can exactly pinpoint the moment it suddenly 'goes' again. It's instantaneous. No holding back in revs. Full power there. Not slowly. This should also rule out the LPG vaporiser as this would slowly fade out. Not suddenly end.
