Locking wheel nut key
« on: August 16, 2013, 12:37:42 pm »
I have finally ruined by wheel nut key - not bad for 12 years!.  I bought a removal tool which took off one bolt - but I can't get the bolt out of the bloody thing now!

Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a replacement key?  It is a VW part and the key is a "52"  I tried VW but they won't even look at it saying replacement of all bolts is the only option. Does anyone have one these things I can buy?

Any advice would be welcome

Got a pic mate? There are two types fitted, McGuard are the normal ones and you can order replacement keys direct from them.

I haven't taken a pic as the old key is so damaged you can't see what it looked like.  It's a standard VW key that was supplied with the vehicle - there are quite a few types - they are numbered - mine is a 52 with seven splines ( Male) .  I won't be replacing the bolts once I get them off unless I can get a new key.  The trouble is I can't get them off!!

I've not had any on for some time as without fail, they cause me problems every time I want to take a wheel off! Speaking to local garages etc, they all say that they are virtually no deterrent any more anyway!

I would imagine you have the standard version then, not the McGuard ones:

Looks like you could buy they key from here:

but it's quite expensive. The other way is to get yourself a large torx bit on a socket and hammer it in. I've had lot's of success using this method but it means that you won't be able to re-use the bolt again.

Thanks Mirez

Yes that's the one - but as you say expensive and the price quoted doesn't include shipping from the us.  I bought a removal tool which got one off but I cannot remove the key from the bolt - despite breaking my vice and almost my arm!. The bolts also have a little pin projecting internally so I will need to grind that off before hammering in socket etc.

Use a security torx bit and you should be fine :)

An old thread now but my locking wheel bolt key (for the same series/ type of locking wheel bolts as those in this thread) is number 51 should anybody have mislaid/ broken their old key and needs a loan of one to get their wheels off!

Also, as I still have the locking wheel bolts fitted to the vehicle, I opt to tighten them to a slightly lower torque than the other standard headed wheel bolts to reduce the risk of buggering them or the key up- the normal specified torque for the wheel bolts is 170nm, which seems like a lot of torque to apply through what is a pretty small key!

170nm on them lockers seems crazy amount of torque,I usually just nip the locking ones up. On my other car as some of the nuts were knackered I opted to fit a full set of standard nuts and not bother with locking ones. If the scrotes want the wheels they will have them no matter what I reckon.

True enough, mine's only got the bog standard 16"s fitted though so I can't imagine they're super desirable! LOL

Yeah same here although they are so prone to corrosion if they are any good they might be desirable to someone! Lol
