Miles to empty - struggling to follow library "How to"
« on: October 13, 2013, 04:35:05 PM »
Hi

I really want the Miles to empty function on my 2005 Gal tdi.

I've tried to follow the instructions in the Library but I'm not sure I'm doing it right.

here's what I'm doing:
1. Connecting to VDO New and reading EEPROM
2. Open "Memory Buffer" in VT
3. Copy & Paste it's contents to a txt file I've called "EEPROM"
4. Open the txt file in the HxD program

and this is as far as I get because my EEPROM only has numbers.   :(   This is what my EEPROM looks like: . . .

Well, burger me!  When I opened the txt file on this PC, it had the correct C1 reading, so I've changed it to E1.  ;D

Am I right in thinking that I re-connect VT and delete all from the memory buffer, then copy & paste the new EEPROM content to the buffer and "Write" it from there?

Thanks

Damn!

It's confusing!  ???

If I view my original EEPROM in a .txt file, I've got the following on row 0410:

0410:87 69 68 5D 5B 56 C1 FF FF FF FF 00 04 0A 02 53 ‡ih][VÁ........S

But if I open it in HxD Hex viewer it reads as:
"28" in row 6 (Where it says C1 in the txt file!

When I open my edited (In notepad) EEPROM in notepad, it reads:

0410:87 69 68 5D 5B 56 E1 FF FF FF FF 00 04 0A 02 53 ‡ih][VÁ........S

BUT in HxD, it still reads:

"20" in row 6 and "58" in row 7

Is this correct?

Should I just copy the contents of the .txt file to the Buffer? and forget what it says in the HxD reader?

Help please?

Have you told HXD to display the contents in HEX? You have to change the display for it to look correct within the program

Well, that's my car burger'd!!!

It now reads in KM and the red info square is glowing red!

Nothing changes if I try to re-load my original Eprom from the original .txt file.

Should this "Fix" still work when the Memory Buffer is copied & pasted into a .txt file or have I done it wrong by not saving as an .eep file?

and yes, I viewed it in HEX

What's gone wrong?

Is it recoverable?

.eep is the extension vag tacho uses so why have you decided to change it to text? Do you have the original dump in EEP format? Pull the cluster from the car, leave it for a few minutes, then power it back up and try and write the original eep file back.

IF that works, follow the instructions exactly as given and dont start improvising with bloody text files!!!!

Nope, not got any .eep dumps.

I followed the instructions that said "when it's done, save the file and disconnect" - I couldn't see where it had created a "File" and then I found the memory buffer, so copy & paste into a .txt file.

I've just tried on my other Galaxy, a 2004 model with much higher mileage and saved the .eep file from "File, Save" (Which I didn't see in the instructions  ??? )  I opened it in HxD and it looked ok, with the C1 in the right place, I altered it to E1 but don't particularly want to mess with this car, so I've just clicked "Save as" in HxD - which saved it as a file.  This "File" isn't an eep but VT recognises it ok and loads it into it's buffer.

Can I use this EEprom from the older car to rectify mine or will it alter the mileage?  What else could it alter?  Is there a way of "Editing" the EEprom from the older car (.eep file) using the data from the .txt file? in case there are things that get altered?

What years, engines and gearboxes have they got?

It will alter the mileage but you can change that back afterward

Both are 1.9 130 tdi ghia models

One is a 53 plate 2004 and "Mine" is a 05 plate 2005  (Which seems to have updated console bezel and don't know what else.  The 54 plate car has Ford Satnav, just in case it makes any difference.

How do I unplug the cluster?  Could I remove a fuse instead, being as it's now dark outside  :(

The year isnt a problem but if its got full fis then its a no go as the coding will be different. I dont have access to any docs at the moment to advise on fuses...

I don't know what "Full fis" is.

anyway, out of desperation, I loaded the edited file from the older car to the newer car and it almost worked, as far as I can tell.  The mileage came up as the original mileage and I've got the miles to empty function but the Red "LED" display screen bit has lots of lines going down it and it is too bright to read the display correctly.

Does the EEprom just mess with the dashboard or could there be other more sinister alterations done?

Can I edit the old car's EEprom?

I've just phoned a friend who has a 2005 Galaxy, with no satnav but it is a 115bhp model, though other than that, it is the same spec.  Could I get the EEprom from that and would you know how to make the edits needed, if any, from 115bhp to 130bhp model?

Alternatively, does anyone out there have the VAG Tacho software and a 2005 130 tdi that they could post me their EEprom?

I'm clutching at straws now and I daren't drive it, in case anything else has been altered!

Full FIS means it has a full size led screen in the center, most of galaxys half half FIS and some dont have FIS at all.

The 115 and 130 difference isnt a problem at all, no change needed. The eeprom is just the instrument cluster, buts its like its firmware - the core program of the cluster hence why caution is needed!

I've just been and pinched my friend's 115 EEprom as my 130 has indeed got the full led screen.

Going to load it on in a few mins so will report back.

Sorted!

All seems as it was, except I've got Miles to Empty and glowing needles now.

Interestingly, out of morbid curiosity, I looked at the original .eep files for the 2004 130bhp (With SatNav & full LED Display) and compared it to the same from the 2005 115bhp and I find that there are differences on many lines and I only got a third of the way through before the headache started.

Surely so many differences can't only be for the full LED display?

Anyway, it's working now, even though I can't help wishing I had the original 130bhp EEprom  :-\

Good work! The differences will be down to all the data it also holds which is car specific... ie, odometer, trip, mpg readings, service schedule etc etc.

Just been out driving and I'm concerned about the MPG now.  It seems to be reading far lower than pre-ballzup.

Could this be due to the EEprom being from a 115bhp car?  Is there a different way of the average MPG being worked out and is this likely to have been altered by foolin' with the EEprom?  If so, does anyone (More than likely Mirez  ;) ) know which line to alter to re-instate the 130bhp settings?

Thanks

Define "far lower" - it's got to relearn everything so the trip calculations will be all over the place for the first 50ish miles.

By far lower I mean that from home to the roundabout 2 miles away, pre-fiddle I could average about 42mpg but now it was 28mpg.

I get that there could be weather variables but that seems a bit drastic and too much of a coincidence.

I understand that there is something that works out the average mpg based on different variables abnd I'm assuming the 115ps uses a different formula?  Sound feasible?

If someone could post an EEP file of their EEprom, from a 2005 130 ps 1.9 Tdi Ghia, would it be a better bet and would it then be the same as mine was, bar the mpg etc

Could anyone oblige?
