unscrew handle and everything else that comes off.
remove door card, iirc to remove glass you have to pull out the glass rubber.
but check to see if the glass has come off of its clamps 1st,
iirc everything requires a torx?there should be 4 or 5 screws holding the regulator onto the inside skin of door.
you need to get the regulator about half way up to see the clamps or even get to them with a driver.YOU will see what i mean  ;)

you can get a repair kit on flea bay.or track a regulator and motor down.
just re read your post,CHECK for broken wires in the door gaitors.

cheers gregers. ive had the door card off today and managed to get the window rolled back up so the car is secure but as soon as its rolled down it wont go back up so the cables aint broke i dont think. im putting it down to the spool been knackard or overspooling. ive seen the repair kits online but dreading doing it as it looks like a p%$$ on.duno if my best bet is get one from the scrappy or attempt to repair mine. i,ll let you know how i get on.  :) cheers again.

how did you get it back up?
when mine went it was stuck down because of the over run, which meant the cables had seized up within the spool,YOU are correct it is a royal P.I.A to sort out but it is doable.
iirc the regulators are different from the mk1 and mk2,but the cabling is the same size as i robbed a mk1 to mend my mk2.

dunno where your based but ive got iirc the remains of 1 and i think a whole 1 in my garage,if your near me id gladly give you a hand in doing a repair.

but 1st take the switch out of the passenger side and attach it to the drivers side, just to see if the switch isnt fubared.

one of the cables was tighter than the other so pulled on one of the cables down towards the bottom of the door while wiggling the glass and it freed it enough to roll the window up by hand. after trying the window today i was brave enough to lower the window a little and close it again.ive tryed to lower it half way today and it worked ok n rolled up afterwards. im wondering if its freed itself? that possible? cheers for the offer gregers but unfortunatly im miles away  8) i,ll try the switch but im putting my money on the spooling thing.so when the mech goes ts up does it mince the spool up? was kind of hoping to get it fixed without waiting on parts. :(

i can only say what mine done,AND that was stripped the thread on the plastic spool, the spool works on a 2 way thread half n half.when half undoes the other half does up.if you get my drift,
and once the cable has done this its gets kinked and will not sit correctley on the spool so jumps out.

so its either obtain a 2nd hand part or a new repair kit.

but until you open it up.NO 1 knows ;)

hey guys. just thought id give ya,s a quick update......... :) so i managed to remove the window reg and pull  it apart......... expecting a kippered spool inside there was nothing wrong with it.  ??? no broken cables...... nowt.  :o so me thinking im gunna end up buying a replacement i decided to put it back in the car and plug the motor back in to see what it did. to my suprise it work flawlessly. :) so i boxed it all up and now its working fine. im just wondering if the glass had moved in the grippers jamming the glass as ive been rolling the window up n down all day with no problems. cheers for the help gregers. ive got the rear one to sort now. least i know how to sort em now.  8)

i think the drivers window has been replaced at some point as when i went to remove the 5 star drive studs to take the window lifter out all the bolts where p%%% loose. also noticed that when the glass went down before it broke it wobbled nearest to the door mirror so wondering if the loose bolts was making the glass jam. saying that though i drew around the clamps so the glass got installed in the right place n when i rolled the window up it jammed.......  >:( undoing the clamps and rolling the window up a little up the glass reset itself so i tightened it all up and has worked great since.  :) replaced the door card today too so well pleased. cheers again for the help.  8)
