Mk2 1.9 TDi automatic stuck in 4th
« on: September 19, 2018, 08:07:03 PM »
hello. Thanks for letting me join.
I've bought a 53 plate Mk 2 1.9 TDi Galaxy Auto. It had an issue with changing gear and was ok but only once warmed up. Done the research and just changed the N88, N89 and N92 solenoids but now the box is stuck in 4th. Reverse OK and can select easily until I get to DRIVE when all the PRNDS lights come on together on the edash. Switch off and they clear to normal. with the ignition on ( engine Not running ) I can select the gears ok and the gear indicates correct. Start the engine and selct REVERSE = ok, NEUTRAL =ok then put into DRIVE and the all the PRNDS light up. It seems to be flicking straight to forth and wont change down.
Anyone know what the issue is please?
thank in advance
Graham

Did you change the oil as well? Thats usually the first point of call when its misbehaving when cold, as the oil thins when its warmed up.

Did the selector switch definitely go back on in the same position it was removed from? (its on slotted holes with some adjustment possible).

All the wires back on the same solenoids they came off of? photos in the instructions here would allow you to check > https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-common-faults-and-problems/ford-galaxy-09a-automatic-gearbox-failure-to-upshift-when-cold/msg17673/#msg17673

hello Brian. Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, the oil was the first thing changed....dark s***ty brown came out and new stuff in. But no diffeence so did the research and renewed the N88,N89 and N92 solenoids and new gasket (three hours to clean off the previous owners gasket glue from the cover housing).
The selector was put back but I suspect it needs looking at again tomorrow. The link you sent me is the one I have followed.
The wiring was carefully put back and checked against the diagram.
The box does kick down ok so I am thinking that its the selector adjuster that needs fettling.
Update tomorrow.

It does sound like the box is detecting an error given the flashing lights - given it wasn't doing do before that suggests either something hasn't gone back in the same position or condition it was in originally.
I think its more likely to be the selector switch bit than anything else, when I've had that on other vehicles its typical it will go into a limp mode and select a gear besides 1st (typically 3rd as its just about possible to drive in that), that was down to a selector switch that needed replacement in that case, but same thing applied with the new one, in that case I had someone watch the indicator switch on the dash and adjust the gear selector as needed until we got it showing all gears correctly. Typically if they detect its missed a gear that will throw them into an error condition. Though given that it selects when you don't have the engine running I would wonder if all the solenoids are working correctly, Were these new units you used?

The three replaced were new Brian. I've tried adjusting the selector plate ( held in with three 10mm bolts under the battery tray) but was alone so unsuccessful. Rain stopped play so I'll get an assistant tomorrow to watch the dash.
Must be honest I'm a little concerned as I don't really want to strip the box again...but let's stay positive.

Oh... The dash doesn't flash. All ok UNTIL it goes into DRIVE then all the gears light up and stay on. Shift into manual and it's stuck in 4.

Don't suppose you have access to VCDS? Given it seems to be detecting an error, suggests you should be able to get something from the box to tell you what its complaining about, which might be easier than guessing.

Only problem is I don't know what diagnostics will speak to the box - I'd suspect VCDS more likely than Forscan though. Worth a try for the price of a cheap lead if you don't have one already (eBay will find you one and its likely to be needed in future, since you only want fault codes one of the 5-10 ones for vcds lite will be fine, you just need a laptop to use it with)

UPDATE. replaced three solenoids N88, N89 N92 ,with new. Unable to connect to ECU* so new ECU sourced from breakers (30) . Connected to laptop ok. Fault shows 'partial short Solenoid 9. With the engine running , the gearbox reports back OK until DRIVE then shoots striaght into 4th and wont come out. Now stripping off the front plate again to check S9.
Q) is that the bottom right solenoid ? anyone got a picture please?

*Old ecu looked ok BUT the rear washer pipe was cut and pointing straight at the back of the ECU....(you couldnt make this up !)

Fixed. FIXED....back on the road. The front plate was removed after the new gearbox ECU spoke with the laptop.....short on Solenoid 9.
Front plate removed and there was the issue : the wire spade connector on S9 had broken off ( probably during the rebuild ) and the wire was shorting out. New spade connector fitted and connection to S9 resorted and SUCCESS. My thanks to my lad for all his hard work on this.
Now I can concentrate on the other bits. Jacking points to be rebuilt, painting, front door catches that need the touch of a midwife to lock but worse of all, the horrendous drumming inside the cab. Rear drivers door is the main culprit but other stuff is rattling too.
Thanks again for all the help on this.

Good work. I've got to sort the door locks on mine as someone has borrowed my Galaxy last week and managed to lose the only remote key I had, both front door locks are stuck solid so the key I still have won't open them, so its a case of unlocking from the boot to get inside!
