Title: Noisy fan belt and juddering when steering.
Post by: matty on November 12, 2012, 01:39:02 PM
This is another fault I recently had and solved.  There was a slight squeak coming from the fan belt and when parking or turning hard left or right, juddering and more squealing through the steering wheel and noise coming from the fan belt.  This was caused by the alternator pulley being seized.  It has a sort of clutch inside it which needs to spin and it wasn't able to, hence causing the noise.  You can buy an alternator pulley tool to do this job, though be careful not to round off the internal thread on the alternator when you take it off.  There are some good instructions on the net if you search it out.  In the end, i replaced the alternator, thus saving on the need to buy the tool and it was about due after 110k miles.  To change the alternator, just detention the fan belt by pulling the lever, remove the belt and unbolt the alternator and disconnect the cable. (remove the little rubber cover.)  Fit a new one and just do the reverse to refit.  Make sure the fan belt is on all the pulleys properly before starting the engine.  (you might want to remove the bottom engine tray to see the belt properly.)   :)
