Outer CV Joint Lateral Play

How much lateral movement is allowed between the shaft and outer CV Joint.
When I pull on the shaft towards the wheel I can hear it knock a fair bit.
Can someone post an exploded view of the cv joint used on the Galaxy, does it use the domed type washer and spacer on the shaft side of the joint to take up the play?
I am not sure if I caused any more play by tapping out the drives initially when replacing the struts, there is no clicking on turns just knocking over bumps, I know one of the inner joints has a fair amount of play and contributes to some knocking.


Also what is the correct torque on the bolt which secures the strut to the knuckle?

How well are GSP driveshafts rated are they OEM spec or remanufactured? OEM's are a bit expensive for a 2006 with 170,000 miles on it.
Had put J&R driveshafts on but had to take them back off, poorly made as far as I am concerned.

Is yours a manual transmission? Parts diagram applicable to the 6 speed manual shafts is here, I've never had reason to remove the outer joints from the driveshafts on mine as usually it's the inner CV joints and boots that give trouble but the diagram suggests it's the standard ball and cage type outer CV joint retained to the shaft by a wire circlip similar to this. There will always be (and there needs to be) a bit of play of the outer CV joint relative to the shaft, but usually for a ball and cage type joint retained by a wire circlip I would only expect it to be a millimetre or so in the axial direction.

Haynes lists the knuckle to strut pinch bolt torque as 110nm.

If I ever had to replace my driveshafts complete I would probably opt for GKN lobro or the Motormax ones but that's just me.

I have just being looking into things further but the SLF VKJP 3046 is a direct replacement for the Ford 1109786 CV Boot kit but this comes with the domed washer and spacer and I would like to try and confirm if theses are indeed present on the Galaxy Outer CV Joint as I feel that this is what has probably collapsed on the outer drives which is causing the excessive noise over bumps and could be a cheaper option.  I just don't see this on the Ford Parts Diagram but that does not mean that it is not present.

I have just checked mine and it has movement like you describe maybe 2-3mm?which I can only see being slight movement on splines between shaft and joint. Checked my other car and that is the same personally I think it is fairly normal.
I don't get any noise from either car.
Are you sure your noise isn't a drop link or something?

Are you sure your noise isn't a drop link or something?

I have just replaced the droplinks with the meyle HD version, and there are also new roll bar bushings installed.
Can you here yours clunk when you slide the shaft?

So far I have new KYB Struts, Meyle HD upper mounts and bearings, new lower control arm bushings, new inner steering rack ends.
Pads were a little loose in the caliper bracket so I tightened them up.
Re checked tightness of subframe bolts, steering rack bolts, calliper bracket bolts, drive bolts.
No play felt in outer steering rack ends or bottom ball joints.
No excessive play felt while rocking the engine.

This is just turning out to be a head wrecker.

Although it is more pronounced from the left front than the right it is still present on the right side, and the sound does not get any louder when the windows are rolled down.

What's the clearance between body and top of strut like? I know someone previously changed the upper mounts for non genuine ones which caused the top cup to impact the body.

What's the clearance between body and top of strut like? I know someone previously changed the upper mounts for non genuine ones which caused the top cup to impact the body.

I initially changed the struts, mounts and bearings as one bearing was grinding up turning the wheel and one of the strut mounts had more end float than the other and the passenger shock felt weak over rough road, and the obvious inner tyre wear. The bottom wishbone bushings were worn.
When I replaced the struts first I had noticed that the kyb ones were close to touching the upper body so I had changed them for the MeyleHD ones which was an improvement in clearance.
I don't know if any harm could have come to the struts for the strut mounts touching the upper body for about a fortnight.

I don't know whether to take the struts back out again and check them for any tight spots, it could be a lot of unnecessary work to try and eliminate the noise being experienced.
These are recommended as being direct oem replacements but I feel that they give to stiff a ride for my liking, but the car is fine at motorway speeds on even road.

I don't think the noise that I hear now was present to begin with I think it has been introduced along the way.
I am now starting to think that the noise may have been introduced.

If it was me I would leave the shafts well alone for now as it does sound like something you have changed is causing the noise. What about disconnecting both drop links and securing ARB so it does not move to eliminate faulty link or ARB bush?
I would be working through gradually eliminating an item at a time.

I would be working through gradually eliminating an item at a time.

I had previously done that, but mind you I have had different sources of knocks going on.
I have just swapped my Drivers and Passenger side drives back into their original positions yesterday as I had swapped them to check out, the car feels a little better driving.
I have also removed the MeyleHD Strut Mounts as I have seen on other forums that they can cause a harsh ride.
I ended up putting back on the original mounts today to check out and they do provide a softer ride.
There is still something going on with the passenger front side over rough surfaces, it maybe a dodgy strut that was replaced or it could be an issue with the bottom ball joint even though I can not detect any play in it.

I can now manage to replace the strut mounts and bearings without even taking the wheel off to save time.
