Quantum LongLife III 5W30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil 507
« on: March 05, 2015, 12:50:50 PM »
Is this oil suitable for a 2006 Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi as it has been supplied by a VW main dealer? Does it supersede 505.01 spec? I have been using the Quantum Platinum 5/40 up to now but was told this is the long life engine for the car.

I have just noticed this on the quantum site under the specification for the above oil.

Note: Quantum PD Diesel must be used in Volkswagen vehicles with PD Diesel engines on Time/Distance servicing.

Should I bring it back and look for the platinum? or should it be safe enough for one oil change.

At a real basic level, 507 is the longlife version of 505 and will be fine for the PD engine. Arguably it would be better then 505 as its designed for longer service intervals, 10K vs 31K. Depending on cost, I wouldn't bother returning it as they are both designed for the PD engine.

Does this mean that an oil stating 507 would be fine for my engine or just this specific make

I was curious about this, but when I saw this note below on the Quantum site for there spec for the 507 oil I decided to bring it back to the dealer and get the Quantum Platinum 5/40 as recommended by Quantum.

Note: Quantum PD Diesel must be used in Volkswagen vehicles with PD Diesel engines on Time/Distance servicing.

The way that I interpret the note is that it is not designed for the PD engine otherwise they would not add in the note and that the Quantum 507 spec does not supersede the 505.1 spec.

The odd thing about all of this is that there are other brands of 507 spec oil that say it does cover 505.1 which adds to the confusion.

The note refers to the type of service interval the vehicle is setup with, variable or fixed interval. It's a note to say you can't use regular 501 on a variable interval car as it won't last the distance.

For our purposes the PD's in the Galaxy only ever came with fixed interval services so it would have been fine.
