(Question originally put to Mirez: )

In the case of a '54 plate Mk2 with both sat-nav and multimedia but no CD changer in the rear glovebox, if I understand correctly from the brochures having both systems fitted means a CD changer wasn't installed from the factory presumably because it couldn't be supported (though the sat-nav alone would support it and the solely multimedia equipped models were fitted with the 6006 in dash changer, which obviously with sat-nav installed can't be done......). I'm assuming looking at the pictures of your Gal you have both systems installed, can you confirm if having both means a changer can't be supported and therefore wasn't fitted from the factory, or can you retro fit one with some mods?

Early cars (up to 53 IIRC) could have both the MFD (Nav) and RSE (multimedia) options fitted but because the earlier RSE was a VHS Tape system, the cassette unit was fitted into the drivers-side rear compartment (where the changer would normally go). From 53 on (again IIRC) the RSE system could be specified with either DVD or VHS systems - since the DVD player moved down into the central console unit (only fitted to RSE cars) the rear compartment was freed up so a changer could have been installed. Unfortunately I don't believe that memo made it to the dealers though as, as you've said, specifying the RSE system meant you couldn't have the changer - even though there would be space on the later DVD model.

Mine didn't come with either system but I retrofitted the MFD with a changer and later the DVD RSE system - I therefore did briefly have RSE with the MFD and changer but I've since ditched the factory MFD for an aftermarket one as the technology was starting to show in terms of navi instructions and route picking.

Thanks for that Mark. So if I understand your reply correctly, if the rear glovebox is empty (i.e, you've got the centre console DVD system), the system would support a changer if you were to install it?

Hi again,
when i bought the mk2  you were on holiday and silver beast was helping me out, he said you were the expert on in car stuff,   i have the ford sat nav and the multi media fitted, i bought a used cd changer hoping to fit  but the plug was opposite to what it should have been    pins instead of plug, he looked into it and said you can fit the cd when you have the other two fitted. seems very odd, so is that it,  no cd available for this car ?

thats what i have, the sat nav  the dvd   and an empty storage box, but as I've found out,  the plug fitted is incorrect to fit the standard cd changer. they should be male and female plugs but the one one all the cd  is a male   but the plug on my car is also male where it needs to be female to fit the cd. Ive checked with a few galaxy breakers  found a great one on ebay called Gala breakers in london  he seems very clued up. he said the only other one fitted had the vw plug which was a long thin type this was sometimes fitted to models with sat nav  but not dvd as well. it just seems mad to me that you can pay 26k when the car was new and not be able to play a cd.

Perhaps an admin can tidy this thread as I'm not sure how to do it, I meant to post the other replies after Marinabrid's original question (two posts up) but I've done it back to front unfortunately and I don't know how to change the posts round (if I can!)  :-[

Anyway, Marinabrid, here is the reply to your question (I had posed it previously). The upshot is if I understand correctly that the CD changer was not fitted on models from the factory with both sat-nav and multimedia but you should be able to retro fit one. However, the question of the non fitting lead connector in your rear glovebox which is of a different style to the standard 6-disc changer you have bought remains to be answered. Possibly the lead in your glovebox was intended to fit the older style VCR unit that Mirez mentioned in his reply (earlier multimedia equipped models had a VCR unit in the rear glovebox instead of a CD changer!), and needs substituting for a standard CD changer unit lead.

Nah its tidy enough - good job :)

To further answer this, don't forget that the MFD NAV unit is a rebranded VW unit where all the other Galaxy "standard" headunits are made by Visteon for Ford. The CD Changer from a regular Galaxy will therefore be of no use, you need to obtain a VW one which uses the Blue Mini-ISO Connector :)

the blue iso connector is indeed correct for the vw ,  i checked with a few vw breakers who had some cd changers for sale.,   but that plug is not the type needed,, if you have seen the plug on the standard ford cd   it is square with pins inside, when you look at the one in my car  its exactly the same   like putting 2 of the same together   i thought that there was maybe a flylead to join the two but even the dealer was stumped by his pictures on his screen,  i think i will just give this up and sing instead !

Are you able to post a picture of the style of connector that you have? If all else fails my only other suggestion would be to get one of the VW changer units and see if a breaker can let you have the lead from a navigation system equipped model that connects it to the sat-nav unit in the dash, although that's a fair bit of work to fit it due to the routing behind the dash and presumably either up in the roof lining or under the floor.

heres a pic of the connector     as you see   its a mirror image of the plug on the ford changer    but nothing like the one on a standard vw plug    with or without sat nav   as I've sen both on pics the breaker sent me .

Thats the early style Ford changer connector, the changer comes with a small flying lead that would plug into that.

Curious why you have it fitted though, are you sure the navigation unit was fitted from the factory and hasn't been retrofitted by someone? Do you have the shark fin aerial on the roof?

As Paul suggests, replace the loom with the VW one (I'll have a look as I think I have one somewhere) and then use the VW Changer. Routing is fairly easy on these actually as the Galaxy has cable channels on both sides of the car under the kick plates.

i thought that it would need a fly lead  but no one ever heard of it  and no dealer help at all.  checked at 4 breakers all who a lots of the cd changers in had never seen a lead or unit with this plug.

Its the older generation of changer that has the built in lead, all other true Fords since around 97 have used the newer changer where the lead plugs in but the Galaxy carried on with the older one for some reason.

There are ones about, this on ebay for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-galaxy-MK2-2000-2006-CD-CHANGER-LD52-/251575976444?pt=UK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP&hash=item3a9318c1fc

BUT, even if you buy that and connected it up to the cable I can 100% say it won't work. The VW head unit won't be able to communicate with the Ford Changer as they "speak" different languagues. You need the VW changer to work with the VW MFD Navi, which will require swapping the lead for the VW Mini ISO version.
