Radio reception
« on: November 08, 2015, 11:02:27 AM »
After some advise on radio reception please.
Originally had the navigation system and reception was terrible on that I have swapped for a VW gamma with 6 disk changer both units had standard iso connections.
Checked poppers on rear window and all ok even using metal coat hanger on connections did not improve so assume aerial in glass ok.
Do these cats have an amplifier and if so where is it located?
Also if does have one are they powered by 12v from head unit or like other VAG cars from 12v up the coax lead?
Car is 2002 Galaxy 1.9tdi ghia if that makes a difference

Cheers

I recall a former colleague telling me that the radios fitted to the Galaxies (made by Visteon) differed to the standard units fitted to other Fords, I'm hazy on the details but I think it was to do with having an amplifier somewhere, and for this reason the coax lead had a separate core carrying a 12V supply? In any case, it looks like vehicles with factory fitted sat-nav had a different aerial setup- check out the parts diagram. I don't know if VW implemented the system differently.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

Yes, its above the rear window. That popper connection is on a trailing lead from it which is about 3 inches long.

Thanks for the replies I will drop roof lining and see what's going on.

It seems there are a few different options according to that parts list.
Mine has the standard window aerial, gps on roof and a seperate Vauxhall roof aerial that was linked to an old FM modulator that had been fitted with an aftermarket DVD. Now redundant as connected to media via phono plugs. The OE aerial lead was used for radio still.

Thinking about it even though ISO connections I lost feed to the media from head unit when fitting the gamma so reckon that could be my problem with aerial?

Anything starting with Vauxhall is likely to be the cause of the problem ;)

The factory media kit uses a signal from the HU to turn on, its typically the same signal that they use to tell an electric aerial to extend, since most manufacturers stopped fitting electric aerials many years ago, few HU's still have this functionality and I wouldn't be surprised if the gamma unit doesn't.

It could be that someone has chopped the wiring for the aerial elsewhere, I can't see any reason why you would need to install a separate aerial as they would have been able to integrate an FM modulator at the back of the HU and nearly always the purpose is to create a radio station on the main car's system in order to hear the DVD player.

The gamma does have leccy aerial output but the slot on iso plug is empty.
It was a very weird set up a DVD player was put in place of the factory vcr then had modulator connected to the roof aerial and switched via a switch on dash and a relay that alternated between OE aerial for radio and modulator to have sound for DVD or playing cd.
I had dash out for matrix change and seem to remember coax runs under top panel and up a pillar and along roof,is that right?
Think I need to drop some labelling and trace it.

Humm quite possible the relay slamming has blown the aerial amp, alternatively could it also be that the relay closed position is for the other aerial and it needs to be switched to give factory input?

Yes, the aerial runs up behind the cluster, up the drivers A pillar and then along to the back.

The relay and all associated wiring have been removed and wiring returned to standard in radio harness.

Don't suppose you have a wiring diagram for the radios do you?
One thing I do remember is the nav HU had an extra plug to the gamma which I assumed was going to cluster? Just wondering if the feed to media and amp are in that plug as when I checked with fluke the white input for visteon box under seat did not correspond to any wires in ISO connector.
Stands a chance the relay could have blown the amp?
Weather permitting will have to rip some bits out to check wiring etc tomorrow.

Problem all sorted found the amp and it is typical VAG and powered via the coax rather than 12v output in ISO, the gamma I purchased is from a Passat which uses a standard 12v so aerial not powered. Simple auto leads separator to power amp and radio reception all ok.

Whilst messing about found some extra wiring behind dash for radio the green, yellow and blue plugs, connected the green and yellow to my changer harness and fitted the blue/red wire from blue connector to sw+ in yellow connector and now have radio info on instrument cluster and radio on supply to media controller.

Another job off the list now to re visit cam cover as that's leaking post head repairs and new heavy duty alternator lead and lugs to fit.
Always seems to be something that needs attention on this old gal!
Thanks for the input on this thread.

Probably not associated with the thread but I've found that the radio reception falls off dramatically, if I open the rear quaterlight.  something to do with ariel connections in the window I think.  close the window and all is back to normal.

Just saying :)

I would say the connection on poppers or small wire from amp breaking down when quarter in open position?
I think it is not the best or most reliable of designs.

Radio reception has been fine since I added the aerial amp power but I have noticed today that if I have a usb power thing in fag lighter or aux power it goes very bad. Only when charging phone etc is ok just the usb power.
Tried different phone charger lead and different usb thing but still the same?
Anyone ever come across this before?

Yup, that's an exceeding poorly made charger :)

Most likely Chinese tat that isn't properly screened and chucking out a load of RF which is being picked up by the radio. They simply don't bother to screen them which is one of the reasons they are so cheap but also completely crap :)

Yes very poor charger it would seem although thought was ok as no problems in tranny connect work van until I realised that is a DAB radio so think less prone to interference?!
Will have to swap it for the belkin one Mrs has in her car😆
