remapping
« on: May 29, 2015, 12:00:25 AM »
Hi all thinking of remapping the gal the question is . can it be done to a 1.9tdi ghia x 1998 110 bhp AFN or can it only be chip which is not something I want to do. some say pre 2000 can only be chip which basically means over fuelling the rail  only doing it because the missus insisted on a new caravan a little bit heavier than the last one .so went away last wk and the gal struggled up a few hills and she said " YOUR car is struggling towing the new caravan lets sell it and get Me (her)  the new Kuga  :(. not on my $%&**life  :D

It needs the input from the other guys here but I'd say getting substantial power increases on the older TDI will be more involved- such as messing around with and either replacing or modifying your fuel pump and/or injectors, as unlike the later PD engine with electronically controlled injectors the earlier system is mostly mechanical.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

how much have some of you fellas paid for your remapping??? I was quoted 250, does that sound 'reasonable' to you?

and would there be loads more stress on the Auto gearbox? because mine aint the smoothest as it is.

Personally I'd avoid remapping an auto on a car that is known not to have the strongest autobox, especially not one with a few miles under its belt.

250 seems the going rate having trawled through the net but some offer a rolling road test as well that's what I am looking at so I get a full report and nothing has fell off.  now found a company who say they have remapped few 110 1998 engines before  :)but not going to hold my breath  :(

The engine will remap just fine - they are strong units.

The transmission is a different story so Id be very wary of overstressing a 17 year old gearbox unless you know it has been rebuilt recently.

The engines will be fine, the gearbox will probably also be fine tbh but I would strongly advise against the rolling road - they put massive stress through the driveline, manual's frequently burn up clutches when on them so God only knows what it would do to the auto box!

As I thought the gal can not be remapped unless you take apart the ecu and replace it with a new chip and as it now 17 years chances are trying to unsolder the ecu could damage the circuit board  totally so its very slow towing this summer and struggling up the A30 then by by Gal  [CRY] hello tiguan or kuga BUt and I mean But if she does ok up and down the A30 AM Keeping HER @$%%$ the missus words of a song comes to mind what have you done for me lately the gal has never let me down in 17 yrs more I can say about her but I do love her ( the gal that is  [HAHA] )

power wise the there's not that much difference as for reliability believe it or not the ford comes out best pending on which model you get same as your missus she prefers the tiguan but with the ford you get a lot lot more for your money
