Replacement McPherson Strut.
« on: February 16, 2018, 05:02:10 PM »

I replaced the O/S strut, bearing and rubber block on my car and it failed the mot again in the amount of movement at the top.  With the strut when it goes into the hub and the lock bolt is tightened - there appears to be possible movement  i.e. it could move as much as an inch in either direction as there is a flat for that on the strut - How do you determine at what point it is correctly lined up?

Am I talking drivel?  Advice please! ???

Is this a MOT centre you've used in the past? There are still some out there who don't know the Galaxy top mount floats when unloaded.

The strut does indeed have a flat area longer then the clamp however on the backside of this flat is an indent where the hub bolt passes so it centres it there. It's not really possible to move it more then a few mm because of this.

Well I questioned the tester  - he showed me what he did and yes he suspended the front wheels and used a prybar under the tyres. I tried to explain that the whole strut drops so that there is then a significant amount of movement but he insists that there is too much.   In the end I went back home took the strut out - could not find anything wrong - except the rubber ring on the top bit is missing - I made one out of a piece of split hose and although everything drops it doesn't drop so far.  I am of the opinion that the 10mm movement etc applies to the top strut mount when the vehicle is on the wheels not when it is suspended.  Anyway I have re booked for Thursday.
