Title: rev counter a bit high or is it just me
Post by: siggieman30 on August 22, 2014, 06:39:11 AM
ok so i noticed yesterday that my rev counter was idling at just under 1000 rpm, is this normal for a TDI or have i have i just not noticed it before? it literally all of a sudden happened after i started my car. i have VCDS lite so what should i be looking for with regards to problems?
many thanks guys

Being that those are 250rpm graduations on the tacho, that looks fine to me, the idle can be adjusted a little with VAG-com- see here (https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/galaxy-tdi-adjusting-the-idle-speed-(pd-engine)/), but reading that suggests optimum idle is about 900rpm, yours looks to be around this so I wouldn't worry about it- my tacho needle is in exactly the same place at idle!

Initial start from cold will give a higher reading 903 RPM iirc once up to normal 90deg will drop back to 860 RPM
A faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause this, also shows a fault in Vagcom/VCDS lite.

Base idle speed varies from engine to engine really, in the case of the Galaxy, an old databook I have suggests the petrol V6 idle is lower (about 700rpm) but the 2.3 petrol and TDI are similar at about 900rpm.

And just guessing but would the faulty coolant temperature sensor make the temperature needle drop and rise randomly too?

Oh yes, common fault

Ok cool. It showed as a fault when I ran VCDS lite the other day too. If only I could find the damn sensor lol

There are four pin versions depending on model but the grey one seems to be the usual one for early MK2's
