Stereo Upgrade
« on: April 21, 2016, 09:10:50 AM »
Hi All,

A few weeks back my factory stereo decided to smoke and no longer works.
This didn't help matters the previous owner allowed 2p and 1p to be put through the tape deck.
As a result this also shorted out my 6 CD changer in the boot along with the cigarette lighter.

Currently I've chucked my old Philips single DIN DAB radio in, however I don't want to leave this in the car as it look awful. I did have my one from the focus Mk1, however the fascia is a different size.

Sorry if this has been posted else where, but i couldn't seem to find it.

Can anyone confirm the measurements of the three Ford stereos below?
I could replace with another original stereo, but CD rather than tape, but there isn't much difference in price between them all.

I understand the connections are different, however i can source the original wiring loom for less then a tenner.
I am pretty competent at changing the existing wires, and i also have a iso kit so i there is no need to touch my original harness

Does anyone know if the below will simply slot into my gap? I can purchase a aftermarket double DIN stereo which will fit no problem, however i'd much prefer a ford stereo to be put in to keep everything original

If you're talking about fitting any of those stereos to a Mk2 Galaxy I think you'll struggle to get a decent fit as they lock into their respective housings in the dash in a completely different way to the original fitment Mk2 units, which have their spring retaining clips in the centre and are released by the double prong circular radio pins whereas the later model stereos you have posted images of all have their retaining clips in each corner and are released by flat blade type tools. Furthermore the later stereos have a lip all around the edge of the front fascia (visible in the second picture you posted) which is absent on the original fitment units.

Without extensive modification I don't see how you could retrofit a later type Ford radio satisfactorily.

Hi insanitybeard

Thanks for the above.

I suspected this as such. I suppose i was just being optimistic.

I suppose i'm left with getting a aftermarket stereo as I've never been keen on the Mk2 stereos.
I saw a post where you can install the Sharan center console instead of the galaxy's as this is double din.

Would this be necessary if a double DIN stereo matches the dimensions of my gap? I understand i'll still need to install a cage to secure the stereo in place. Or am i missing something?

Assuming yours is same as my mark 2 the vw single din head unit and single din cd changer fit perfectly, the type fitted to Passat b5.5 and mark 4 golf.
The wiring for mine is iso as it had the sat nav originally only thing I needed was the inline aerial connector to power the amplifier. Again not sure if the original ford unit wiring differs from ones that had sat nav?

Thanks johnnyroper,

I would look as mine is the same as yours.

I might have to invest in the VW stereo.

Unfortunately i don't have a multi-function display in my MK2, although that would be a nice touch.

With the link you supplied this would suggest its two single DINs? If so, wouldnt it be possible to move my digital climate control to the top?
The reason i say is because im rather lanky, and pressing the buttons on these things is a pain in the backside i have to lean forward every time. My seat is quite far back so i can A) see the speedo, B) reach the petals without smashing my knees against the steering wheel

In the process of moving the hazard light switch and parking sensor switch
How stupid to put it on the passenger side next to the cup holders  :D

I looked at moving mine around but the fixing holes did not match up if I remember correctly.
Yes it is 2
Single din units.

Is yours a ghia model? Thought all ghia had the multi function display in centre of instrument panel?

Guys no its not a double din hole. The Galaxy uses a 1.75 DIN radio as standard, the only exception being if you have navigation in which case you get the VW center panel that IS a true double din hole. The panel is easily interchanged though and costs about 40

Hi johnnyroper,

Thats a tad annoying. I was going to have to take it out and give it a clean as the button are stickey and though that was a good idea.
Suppose its back to leaning forward  ;D ;D

Mine is the Ghia model, and according to ford is the top they did in that year.
However i noticed it is lacking certain features such as heated seat and full display. I do have half a display, i haven't see many 2.3 Galaxy's with a pre-install full screen except autos.

Its funny how Ford will say that the Ghia come out with everything on however my neighbor has the 1.9 TDI Ghia (late 2001 rather than mine which is june 2002). His didnt come with heated front screen or cabin seats.
(Although i didnt know i had cabin seats until i was going through the drive thru trying to work out what the extra lever did  8-))

 Hi Mirez,

I thought it used the 1.75 DIN as well. my old Focus was certainly a 1.75, however it wasnt until i went to install the focus stereo i relised there was a 25 mm gap  :o

My gap is 180 x 100 mm.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_7736

From what i can find online this make it a double din?

The multifunction display to the best of my knowledge was only installed on vehicles with factory fitted sat-nav, which was not a standard feature, even on the Ghia models.

That explains the difference then it's not a ghia thing it is because mine had navigation from the factory.
So many different variations available it seems even with the top spec of car

Isn't that the point with high-spec cars?  You don't want something that is exactly the same as everybody else, so you have options on a lot of stuff.

Whilst I agree there are options on high spec cars to personalise things, but you would think basic stuff like MFD would be part of standard kit.

Gotta agree with johnnyroper, although some features like captain seat i can understand.
I find having the drivers seat spin round its pointless. Steering wheel prevents the seat going back at least 10" and your legs are crammed. Better of leaving the seat in its normal position.

Took a stroll through autotrader and it would appear that most available galaxy's in my area were the Ghia models.

Looking through various ones (I was seeing if i could find a 2.3 that ever had a full display and any additional features i can add  :D) and the difference in spec is ridiculous.

It seems some Zetecs have more features than Ghia.

My childhood understanding with ford <04 was

LX is for cheapos who just drives and doesn't care about any features. Just need 4 wheels and a engine.

Zetec is for people who want a bit more tech in there car and alloy wheels

Zetec S - Boy racers

Ghia was for people like me want every possible feature that can be fitted.

On a side note, anyone manage to retro fit automatic lights and rain sensors (turn wipers on).

Nowadays, though, most (if not nearly all) cars are built to order.  The local Nissan factory churns out a car every minute 364 days of the year and every one is to order.  If I was spending the better part of 30,000+ on a car that was going to be built specially for me, it would be _precisely_ the way I wanted it to be, catalogue specifications notwithstanding.

There will be bog-standard cars for fleet purchases but I bet they are the exceptions these days.
