Title: Strut top nut
Post by: actionvin on August 05, 2017, 01:24:24 PM
I'm about to undertake a top rubber and bearing change. I'm presuming that the top nut will be seized. Do I loosen the nut with the drive shaft etc
In place, or do I remove the lower half drive shaft etc first. Help always appreciated

Doing it on the ground, i mean at home? Top nut will most likely be corroded really bad.  I would start by making sure its going to undo.  Then strip everything from the bottom. But its possible to remove the top nut then the plate then leave the strut nut done up on the bearing then raise the car and remove the top mount and swap over .

Thanks, it's at home and will be on axel stands, I'll be changing the drive shaft, brake discs & pads too. I was thinking that I'd move the nut before attempting to remove the lower assembly

You might be lucky.  The nut might undo.  Every one i done was with a snap on universal joint socket and i think 21mm socket and wire brush attatchment on a drill and half a can of wd40 with an air ratchet gun . Otherwise you might have to angle grinder it off .

well, along with the other jobs I have to do it looks like it's rusted solid ... how do you get an angle grinder in there ? or do you use a small dremel type device ?

Once the scuttle and bulkhead extension piece are removed I think you can just about get angle grinder in there to chop the top cup.
You could also try drilling the nut to see if that will release it?

I chopped the O/S one but can't get my grinder to the N/S one, might try drilling the nut
