Sump drain plug not tightening.
« on: April 19, 2014, 11:09:26 pm »
Hi all done a routine service but when It came to tightening the stump plug it goes in but will not tighten only finger tight. Does this mean a new stump? And anybody got a quick fix till I can sort it? Thread tape?

Yup thats sounds like stripped threads :(

Replace the sump, its easy enough on the Galaxy - for me, much easier then helicoiling or anything like that! Thread tape as a real emergency get me home fix, if it comes loose you'll dump the oil which will be engine game over and also could be extreamly dangerous

If the sump is drained of oil, and if you don't want to go down the helicoil route then you could epoxy/ liquid metal the plug in until you can replace the sump, if you do this though it'll probably be a one way trip and you'll likely knacker the sump if you try to remove the plug again. Other than that you could try to tap an oversize thread in the sump and fit a larger plug, assuming there's enough metal around the stripped thread to allow this.

If you go down the route of buying a new sump, be very careful if you purchase of ebay, you have to match the sump to the engine code and a new gasket/sealant.

There are however many repair kits available on ebay if you wanted to try that.

you have to match the sump to the engine code and a new gasket/sealant.

The Mk2 TDI's be it 115, 130 or 150 all share the same sump, its only the petrols that are different. The only thing to look out for on is that you get one with or without the level/quality sensor dependent on what's currently fitted.

@ Mirez, I'm only going from my experience and what VW told me last week, I went to buy one that you recommended to me in a previous thread (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oil-Sump-with-hole-for-OIL-Level-Sensor-VW-Audi-SEAT-Skoda-Ford-038103603N-NEW-/360682071295?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGalaxy&hash=item53fa53a4ff) the part number for this is 038103603N which is not suitable for the 1.9TDi AUY engine that sump is 038103603C.

By the way the seller in my post above has put the price up by more than £16 since last week.

Humm curious why they say that as the letter on the end is the revision indicator. Therefore the part they say you need is the same as the one they have given you, its just a revised version. Granted, we don't know what the revisions are but it must fit as its the same part!

Yes weird, but according to VW its not the right one, I phoned the company that was selling the one on ebay "Volksbits" and they said they don't sell the 038103603C so think I'll just keep looking and pick one up eventually.

Personally, I'd take that with a pinch of salt as they'll go 100% with what the parts computer tells them - given its an ordering system, it will only show the latest revision that was fitted to the Sharan as that's what they would order. It won't show revisions made to the part on future models. I would say probably 90% if they actually ordered that part it wouldn't be a C that arrived but a much later revision, probably even never then the N.

The PD engine was fitted to nearly all VW's and they are virtually all identical (hence all the extra bolt holes on it!) I have a passat sump on mine :)

Like Mirez says, your average partsman can only tell you if the computer says a part number is applicable or not, they don't actually know what the differences are. In this case the only likely difference is that one sump has an additional hole and bolt threads machined into it for an the oil level sensor whereas the other is unmachined and blanked off!

I vaguely remember some one changing an engine before, same engine code and having problems with the air charge pipe, the sump had no drilling's for the pipe clamp just below the crankshaft pulley.
