« on: February 01, 2014, 07:01:23 pm »
As title, whats the oil sump plug thread size please?

And has anybody used one of those sump thread repair kits where you wind a bigger tap in , in the event of stripping the thread removing the old one and the use the suppllied plug?

Mk2 1.9pd

I know its a month too late , but I also took the threads out with my sump bung 2 years ago (new years eve) !
thread size is m14 x 1.25---the same size as spark plugs, I had access to a helicoil kit.
machine mart sell the kits with drill, tap, helicoils and tools needed--you enlarge hole slightly to fit a stainless steel threaded insert, your ols sump bung simply screws back into it.

Thanks for the replies fellas
Ive seen the helicoils myself but was wondering about the other kits
Seems in this case you get a m15 tap ,wind it in make the hole bigget and use supplied m15 sump plug

A Helicoil will provide a stainless steel thread, with less chance of stripping.  Just tapping out bigger and changing the plug will still be into aluminimum, with a chance of the same thing happening again.

Down to personal preference really

Changing the sump is so easy on the tdi its really not worth doing anything else.

Thats as maybe Mark , but you know its gonna go wrong at 4pm sunday afternoon lol
Id rather have the repair kit to hand than a spare sump laying around just in case its needed :-):-)

Many thanks for your advice as always
