Well thought i would do my drivers side top mount yesterday.  Worse I have seen on the top nut. Got it all stripped. Knew i would be changing shock absorber. But bearing housing bolt to shock snapped. Got a lot of drilling to do now.

Use copper grease on the nut, fill the cap with some used oil and then put a rubber glove on top. Did mine recently and after assembly ive done this to prevent them rusting solid again. Rain water goes straight into them and sits there. It's a design flaw

I managed to get one off, the other had to be cut. An absolute pain... You definitely need new shocks and cups including the nuts for this job.

I did mine about 3 weeks ago - absolutely horrible job to do.
Defo bad design, water just collects in the cups.
After changing the shocks, I filled mine with grease and cable tied some thick plastic over the top.

Don't forget the Galaxys have " floating suspension mounts". The cups are only used to stop the strut falling out when you the the car up.

Having done the best part of about 30 GalaShaBras in the past I struggled just like you chaps with the first few, the last 20 odd have been a doddle though.
Invest in a rattle gun with a decent extension and knuckle joint, you then get someone to part open the bonnet and go in between the windscreen and bonnet. Since using that technique I've never had any cause issue, even the most rusty watery looking ones have come off in just a few minutes :)

Mirez,

That's interesting what you said about the rattle gun. How do you stop the centre shaft from spinning. I thought you need a 21mm spanner and allen 6mm key to do the job.

The rattle gun would spin the shaft and nut ??????

You generally find the rattle gun will move it a bit even without the spindle being held, so its got a good chance of working like that if the gun is good enough. I doubt you'd even get the 6mm allen key to do anything useful in the ones i've seen as theres not enough left to hold against usually. That fitting works ok when the shock is new, not so well when rusted away or chewed up as they tend to be.

It's always just come off without the center spinning using that technique, the one exception was a nut that was so badly corroded you couldn't even see it. Since the strut was also being replaced I just locked a set of mole grips on to the shaft lower down.

Its a bit rudimentary but I often use a good quality pair of vice grip pliers clamped around the top of the strut. That usually helps it the strut starts to spin.

would anyone have the part number for the cups? ive tried searching but only find top mounts (annoying). i have all new to go in (shocks front and back, springs front and back, drop links, top mounts, roll bushes,) but no cups. mine are awfull so will be cutting ether at the top or as high as i can from tthe wheelarch and hopefully slide the remaining lot out the top. cheers all
