Trip computer upgrade
« on: March 12, 2016, 04:16:28 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new to the Galaxy club, purchased a 2004 1.9 tdi for the space.

It's only the base model, so I'm missing my trip computer from my old car, and hence looking into retro fitting one.

I've already got the wiper stalk and speedo cluster, but I'm struggling on finding the wiring modifications required to get the new stalk to interact with the new cluster.

Does anyone have an info on this, can provide links etc?

Many thanks.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Edward, wiring the cluster isn't that big of a deal. You'll need to run wiring for the outside temperature sensor and for the low screenwash sensor (assuming you want the full experience, why wouldnt you!).

The tricky bit is finding a cluster that is compatible as there are 6 revisions of speed signal which isn't easy to adjust afterwards. Whats the car's build date as the wiring varied a lot around 2004 so giving you the correct pins to wire the stalk up will need the build date.

Hi There.

I've already purchased a cluster, and plugged in. Speed & RPM seem okay. Yes I do get a warning about washer level being low, and no outside temp is displayed. These would be good if I could wire these in. (I don't think my washer bottle has the sensor for level, so not too bothered about that. Will I already have the outside temp sensor already with it being the base model?

The car is 2003 build, vin = WF0GXXPSSG3J27977

Had a look at the plugs on the wiper stalk, on the inner plug, only the bottom two are wired. I assume additional ones of these need connecting to something.

Many thanks for the help. Looking forward to this project now the weather is getting better.

Cheers.

Yup, it's a base model, hence doing a few minor upgrades :)

Looking forward to the wiring details for the trip computer.

I'm not sure you'll find an old style wiring diagram, as things are run somewhat differently these days.  The best bet is refining your GoogleFu until you find an online guide to how to do the job.  The technical guides here and on Fordwiki would be a good start. If nobody has done this particular job themselves before and documented it, your only option is to take a deep breath and dive in....

If you do, I can guarantee that a "how-to" article with photos will garner you with undying fame.  Or something like that.

YES please do write it up as thats why this type of site exists, if people don't bother to reciprocate then the future belongs to paid sites :(

So on that note, I've looked it all up for you and the wiring you need to do is:

Outside Temp Sensor:
Pin 7 of C170  (Ground to Pin 1 of sensor) (Will be populated already as is a common ground)
Pin 26 of C169 (Supply from Pin 2 of sensor)

Low Screenwash Sensor:
Pin 7 of C170 (Ground to pin 1 of sensor)
Pin 6 of C170 (Supply from Pin 2 of sensor)

Trip Stalk:
Pin 1 to C169 Pin 24
Pin 2 to C169 Pin 23
Pin 3 to a suitable ground
Pin 4 to C169 Pin 25

Good luck!

Many thanks, your a Star!

One question though, which is C169 & C170, I assume these are the two connectors on the rear of the cluster, but which.

Cheers.

Just had a quick look at the two connectors...

There does not seem to be an easy way to work out :-

a) If the pins are already wired up, and
b) If they are wired, any ideas on the wire colours?

These connectors seemed to be sealed, and don't fancy trying to take them apart.

Cheers.

No they come apart very easily.

Remove the entry cable tie
Look on the side of the connector for a square tab, lift this and slide the cover off the connector
You'll then see all the pins, look on the side of the holder and you'll see a rectangle cut out for each pin. Inside there is a tab of metal, depress with a small screwdriver and the cable can then be slid out.

Hi,

Decided to take a look at this today (since it's dry and the sun is out)

I've hit a stumbling block.....

The uninsulated female spade connectors which I have, don't fit in either the C169 connector, or the wiper stalk connector.

Does anyone have the part numbers for these for the C169 & Wiper connectors? Are these something which I can only get from a dealer (If they can be bought that is)

Cheers.

Went into Ford parts department. They could not help me, don't sell the connectors or pins :(

Trying some I've found on ebay which look similar sizes etc.

Fingers cross again.

Try this site if you are able to measure what you need and identify from pictures, you should be able to cross reference part number with a uk supplier?

@Mirez gave me this link when I did my oil level sensor which was very helpful

http://www.passatplus.de/umbauteile/stecker/stecker4.htm

some of the bits are what veedub call brand locked so you have to shop around between audi and seat as well to get em

Plenty of places that sell automotive electrical parts, online, without having to swim in the bay of sharks.
