Title: VCDS READER?

Hello
I am another newbie to your site,reading through it I am very impressed by the wealth of knowledge available on here!
Can anyone help me out I wonder?
I have a 2002 Galaxy 1.9 tdi 130bhp model and am I correct in assuming that the port to connect the reader is up under the dash behind the steering column?
Also can anyone recomend any cables or readers to use,are the cheaper ones o.k. or is this why the dealer ones cost so much money?

Yes the connector is under the lower fascia by your right leg

If you just need the basics from a diagnostic scan then you need a laptop and use one of these leads.

Then download the free software from Ross Tech

It doesn't need to be registered to do the basics like scanning for fault codes and clearing most faults.

Is this an easy job,do you just fire up the laptop bring up the ross tech software,open it,connect the cable between the plug under the dash and laptop and let it do its thing,or do you have to drive around the block with it plugged in to simulate driving?

If your just checking for fault codes or clearing codes you only need the ignition on you don't need the engine running.

If you have codes logged it's best to make a note of them or print them off then clear the codes, then drive the car a distance and then rescan and see if any faults reappear as they may have been old faults from a previous time

If you have boost issues you need to drive the car and create a log file which can be changed to graph form to get a better picture of whats going on.

There is basic help with the program on the Ross Tech site and on the net or of course on here.
