Visteon MB-800 DVD Player stop working.
« on: May 01, 2020, 01:15:59 PM »
I need some help I have recently my Vw Sharan Visteon MB-800 DVD Player stop working.

I've contacted an electrician to check the system and said that the DVD is damaged.

Checked the plugs and cables. Everything is ok and getting power to the unit.

The remote control emits a signal

The unit is located between the 2 front seats.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they solved it and if the DVD player is broken is there a viable alternative to replace the visteon MB-8000 and if there is where can I get one.

Thanks.

We need a bit more info.

What are the symptoms? Not powering up? Not showing the DVD? Screens working?
When did the problem start? Anything unusual before hand?

Hi there.

It just doesn't work, there is no picture, no signal or sound.

Thansk.

I'm assuming it's the factory fitted DVD player that you've got fitted as per this parts diagram? (which is for the Ford Galaxy version as I can't find the equivalent diagram in the VW Sharan parts lists but they should be very similar if not identical systems)

I don't have any knowledge of the system to be of much help but if the DVD player is defective (I see there is a UK [eBay] seller listing a used MB8000 unit currently) then either you need to see if you can find a replacement second hand unit or see if the old one can be repaired by a car radio specialist (though whether they can work on or still get spare parts for the Visteon units is a different matter). Once upon a time Ford offered a repair service where the units would be sent back to Visteon UK for repair, I assume VW may offer a similar service in your country, but it depends if the units are now classed as obsolete, and it's unlikely to be cheap.

Failing that, then you just have accept it's not economical to repair the existing system and get an aftermarket system instead with the screens that just strap to the front seat headrests.

As a final thought, it looks like there is a separate control module for the system which is number 13 in the parts diagram I linked above, could it be this unit that's defective and not the player itself?

Has it ever worked to your knowledge?

The most common cause of failure for these is simply firmware. It MUST receive 12V supply on the permanent feed before it receives it on the ignition feed, if not then it will be locked out until such times as power is removed from both supplies and then reinstated (which in reality means a new battery).

Nearly all of the ones I have seen that are 'faulty' could be recovered just by pulling fuses and disconnecting the battery.

Pull the fuse for the RADIO, make sure you have your keycode first, then disconnect the battery. Wait 5 mins and then connect it back up, Wair another 5 minutes and then put the fuse back in for the radio. Turn the radio on and then try and power up the DVD player.

Exactly as my post, radio fuse is important as the DVD player gets its ignition signal from the radio.

Ok.
I was in doubt.
The electrician told me that independent electricity comes to the DVD and that it's an independent module!!!
BTW do you know where I can find these fuses?
Thanks.

Fuse will be in the main fuse box under dash.

On my old mark 2 the DVD didnít work and was exactly as Mirez pointed out a loss of permanent power to the control module under centre console. Fuse was fine I traced it to a problem in a connector under the offside seat. Had to make good the wiring. Been several years but I seem to recall it was a white wire to the control module that was permanent power supply.

On the DVD control panel there is an in-car charger socket that has power.
It can indicate that the module has power?

Hi.

The power cable isn't the same?

To do the job, what care do I have to take when disconnecting the battery?
What can the car lose by plugging in the battery other than radio memories?
ESP, Glasses?

Many thanks.

No the power for the socket is seperate to the visteon.
Why do you need to disconnect to the battery? You need battery connected to check for a permanent 12v feed at visteon controller.

If you do disconnect battery then you will need to reset the windows, and possibly radio code. Canít remember if radio requests code or not in those cars so long as itís the same radio that was fitted before battery disconnect.

hi,
i had problems with the old system fitted in my 06 galaxy.so i took them out and replaced them with some dvd screens from ebay.they came fitted in the headrests and are great for watching videos. i have a pioneer head unit as well instead of the original radio cd player.the head rest players sound is picked up by the FM  signal on the  original head unit. i have connected the dvds onto my head unit with the rca connection .
something like this.

With you now you need to disconnect for a while to try a reset first before delving deeper. Only code if it needs one and window reset to worry about after battery disconnected.

Ok, i'll do this:

"Pull the fuse for the RADIO, make sure you have your keycode first, then disconnect the battery. Wait 5 mins and then connect it back up, Wair another 5 minutes and then put the fuse back in for the radio. Turn the radio on and then try and power up the DVD player."

It is enough to turn off or + turn off both?

I don't know what the setup for the DVD player is as I've never seen it, but would suspect you need to be sending 12v from whatever pin the DVD uses to wake up.  Typically that might be the power aerial feed from the radio. That seems to be what's suggested above. It may be the case you either need to enable the output on the radio or connect it up.

Will the power for the DVD come from the radio or is it independent?

You see post 2 above, where I asked for more info? That was the place to say you have an aftermarket radio!  8-)

The DVD player is powered independently but gets a switch-on signal from the head unit, you'll need to find what outputs your new head unit as and connect that, either the power aerial or power amp wire normally.

The attached should help with that, its the wiring diagrams for that part of the car. The basic bits you need to know (and can check yourself with a multimeter) is that the radio uses either a red/blue or red/black cable to provide a 12v signal (shown at the top righthand side of the first diagram) and that comes in on connector under the centre console on the white cable (This seems to be pin 5 of that connector, 5th pin on the top row when you look at the connector with the latch at the top into the pins side). So either find the wire at the back of the radio and make sure its connected and getting 12v on it (typically the 12v for power antenna or accessory feed isn't connected on aftermarket units, but may be available as a flying connector lead with a plug on the end of it).

If there isn't 12v at it, with the radio powered on, then thats what you need to sort. If there is 12v at the radio, but not at the centre console plug, then you have a break somewhere in the cable, c524 shown on there is the connector under the righthand seat shown in that diagram (you can't see that on the pdf unfortunately).

Given you've swapped the head unit, what might be simpler to prove if the dvd works, is to put the old unit back in place and see if it then will power up, if you've got it still? If it does then show the diagrams I've attached to this post to your electrician and the unit working with the old head unit and get him to fix it if you don't want to fix it yourself.

Well thats easy then to test for yourself. One word of warning though, the diagrams are from the Ford Galaxy side, rather than the Sharan. So you may find slight differences. But if it works on the original radio, your auto electrician should be able to make it work on the other one. Obviously take both units along to him or have them available when he comes to you.

A quick test with a multi meter on the wiring to see if it has permanent 12v and then 12v at DVD controller plug when radio is on.

Simple to sort out then on the aftermarket head unit locate the blue wire as that will be a feed out when radio is on. And looking at the drawing above you want the white wire but use a meter on continuity to check from radio plug back to DVD controller to be sure. Once confirmed which wire it is connect blue from the kenwood to the one in wiring harness.

Apologies red/blue at radio end and white DVD controller end.

Ok.
Everything is running now. Radio and DVD Player.

Regarding the operation of the DVD, sometimes it only connects one screen or sometimes it has two screens connected, one is being a movie and the other is not in the settings menu.
Is there a correct sequence for those who work with two screens simultaneously?
This already happens before replacing the radio.
