Xenon headlight on the blink
« on: October 21, 2013, 06:36:26 PM »
Hello peoples..! I recently acquired a 2003 TDI galaxy ghia from my brother and there're a few niggles here and there most of which I could probably sort of from old posts. Probably the most important of which is that one of the headlights, drivers side has stopped working. My brother tells me it was on the blink when he had it, got the bulb replaced (80!!) Which seemed to fix it but has over time stopped working again. Any known probs with the Xeon lights? Any clue what likely culprit could be? Would it be worth swapping them to normal headlights? Any help would be great.. cheers:)

Its not a case of just swapping them over for normal halogen one's, there is a lot of wiring changes that would need to be made to do that!

Generally, Xenon lights are good for the life of the car and it's unusual to need to replace any part of the system to be honest. That said I would suspect the ballast pack on that side is failing - when the lamps are new, the arc gap is smaller putting much less stress on the ballasts, over time the gap increases and the ballast has to work much harder to ignite the lamp, this is probably where you are now.

One important thing with Xenon lights is that they should never, ever, be turned on/off rapidly. If a previous owner was in the habit or putting on the headlights before starting the car, or if a little-un has been allowed to muck about with them in the past then it could be that they have unduly stressed the system - it could also be that it's just failed lol

The bad news is that the ballasts are the most expensive part of the system and a fortune new but on the plus side, whilst they are still expensive, there are a fair few out second hand ones out there to choose from as most of the VW/SEAT/AUDI range from that era all use the same ballast. This: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231069367098 is the cheapest on Ebay at the moment (I had planned to buy it as a spare but you need it more!) and fitting isn't that bad if you are a reasonably competent DIY'er - Failing that take a trip down this way and I'll pop it in for you :)

*Just to note, I have nothing to do with that ebay link - its purely the cheapest "1 307 329 066" part on there at the moment.

Ok i fitted a new (used) ballast thingy on the back of the headlight unit and was happy that it worked as soon as I'd fitted it. Next day though, sun goes down and again it fails to ping on. Now confused. I'm guessing its not a loose wire because I'd have thought it'd be pinging on and off going over bumps etc. It'll usually come on if i turns lights on and off a few times then it'll come to life, not rapidly on and off, just slowly. Any ideas would be much appreciated got mot coming up soon..

Only other thing it can be then is the igniter. Unfortunately much MUCH more of a PITA to replace though - it's inside the headlight and you'll have to take the front lens off to enable you to get to it :(

Strangely, I had mine fail recently - I did take some photos but haven't gotten around to doing anything with them yet.

I didn't realise you could take the lenses off of the lamp unit without damage- or is that what you mean by it being a PITA?! Having looked at the halogen lamp bodies when I took them out a while back, the lens appears to be sealed all the way around the perimeter as you would expect to keep the water out, I take it the xenon housing is the same.

Not that this helps but I noticed on ebay somebody selling a brand new Bosch Xenon headlamp for a bargain price (compared to the cost of a new one from Ford anyway!).

Yeah you need to take the 3 clips off and then heat the headlight up in the oven (VERY LOW TEMP!) the sealant will then become supple and the lens can be removed - relatively easily. I'll see if I can find the photos...

Where would i then buy the igniter part once I'd cooked the headlight? And then new sealer to reseal?

It's number 18 on this parts diagram, so obviously you can get it from Ford (and VW as well I expect although the headlamp is a different style/design to the Sharan one), I've no idea what they'll charge you for it mind!
