1.6 petrol engine

Help please,
I wish to buy an S Max but am undecided on whether to go for petrol or diesel. The post 2010 1.6 petrol has a quicker 0-60 time than the 2.0 diesel, but all opinions seem to suggest that the diesel 'feels' quicker. Does this simply mean that the petrol engine has to rev more to deliver the performance?
Can anyone please explain the above, and has anyone had experience of both engines? (for environmental reasons I would prefer to drive petrol, but not at the cost of being dissatisfied with the performance)
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

well personally i wouldnt go for ANY 1.6 petrol engine in a mpv.i had a zafira on hire yonks back and scared the bloody life out of me totally bloody gutless.

if you want petrol then go for the 2.2 iirc its got a volvo engine in it?

but do your research,look at ebay and see what each version is going for.remember resale etc the tdi will hold its value a lot better then a petrol version.

Probably too late in the day to be of assistance, but...

I took a 1.6 petrol S-Max out for a drive at my local Ford dealer a couple of months ago (before I bought a Galaxy diesel) and can confirm that it was not a wholly satisfying experience. 

The engine felt overwhelmed by the bulk of the car and needed to be worked hard to make satisfactory progress. 

Unless you intend to use the car mainly for short journeys round town, I'd recommend a diesel all day long.   If you don't do many miles and your car will spend most of its time pottering round town, a modem diesel won't be happy and you'll face clogged DPF concerns etc. before too long.
