I have a 2015 ford galaxy 2.0 TDCI powershift at quite high mileage 125k. But being ex Addison lee(am 2nd owner), it was serviced and gearbox oil changed beyond normal standards. Have driven only 5k since I bought at 120k miles before a year.

- Before 3-4 months on a cold morning, after driving for about 1 mile The "Transmission failed" error started displaying on the dash with alerting noise. So i pulled over, turned it off and then restarted and it ran fine since then without any issues.

Yesterday, I bought ELM obdII for my other car and used it on my galaxy to see if it had any codes etc. It showed

"P284E(00)
(ECU: Transmission control unit)
Status : Test failed since last DTC clear
OBDII: Transmission shift fork B - unrequested movement"

I was able to clear too. But I am worried if I need to get anything fixed ? what should i do next to keep the car in good running order.

Thanks

Hi :)

The powershift gearbox is a dual clutch box, meaning its essentially two gearboxes in one. The result is that it can switch from box A to box B almost instantly which is why the shifts are so snappy compared to an old slush automatic.
So if you imagine you are driving you are constantly changing between the two boxes - 1st gear is on box A then it shifts to box B for 2nd gear, back to box A for 3rd etc etc. (example gears, I don't know off the top of my head which is on which box for Ford)

The code you are seeing relates to one of those boxes being in a position it wasn't expected to be in, ie not being ready for the changeover to occur which is what would have put that message on the dash. Now, dual shift boxes are built to high tolerances so it's not uncommon for the smallest of timing 'glitches' to cause errors and whilst it shouldn't happen, one in a blue moon isn't that much to be worried about.

Servicing on them is critical though!!! Make sure you keep on top of gearbox oil and filter changes as the solenoids (the electric selectors) need to be bathed in super clean oil to stop them 'gumming' up, which in turn will slow their operation and cause the timing to be behind. Cold weather makes oil thicker so if its getting dirty the two coupled together could be why you first saw the issue in the cold weather - in any case, a preventative flush would be advisable!

Thank you for your quick reply.
The gearbox oil change is still 3-4k miles away. Do you think I should just go ahead and get it done sooner than that.

- Is gearbox oil & filter change the right thing to ask or do I get quotes for "gearbox servicing" which would include flushing and any other maintenance)
- Would you recommend going to a ford dealer (have heard its a specialist job, to be done at right temperature etc)

I would get oil and filter changed as itís pretty much due anyway.

Itís not as bad a job as you think, just have to do a proper procedure to refill it. I recently done a bmw DCT box,you have to fill to spill, run on fast idle then leave idling and refill to spill while still running and oil at a specific temp. Think it was 40 degrees.

The fluid is horrendously expensive for these dual clutch gearboxís. BMW prices for sump with suction filter, high pressure filter and 7 litres of dct1 was £600. Ford powershift is not as expensive I donít think but be prepared to have wallet emptied.
