Knocking noise Front LHS
« on: June 06, 2017, 04:39:16 PM »
Knocking noise, front LHS when driving over small bumps, rough-ish tracks.  No noise on smooth road.  No noticeable difference in any noise when steering left or right.  Does not sound serious but is annoying.  Have changed the LHS anti roll bar link, have changed the LHS outer steering tie rod.  Still happening.  Any suggestions?

Have you checked for any play in ball joints and also condition of anti roll bar bushes?

Thanks Johnny Roper and sorry for the slow reply.  Need to check the alert me to replys settings.
I have give all the ball joints a good pull and push and having replaced the outer tie rod and the anti roll link arm I think I've covered that off.  That leaves the anti roll bar bushes as you suggest although they look far from easy to get at.  It also leaves the wishbone ends.  Do you have any feel for how best to get at the anti roll bar bushes or the liklihood of it being the wishbone ends?
Thanks again.
Richard

Just noticed you have mark 3 so my experience is not much use to you,the mark 2 was surprisingly easy to get at.

If your mark 3 is anything like other ford stuff (mondeo, jag x type) then it requires rear of subframe lowering to gain access.

Hi Richard my wife's MK3 Galaxy had the same knocking noise on the N/S/F and we checked everything from ball joints, wheel struts, track rod ends to the anti roll bar links but nothing. We took the car to my mate who works for Fords and he found our problem in 2 minutes and you never would have guessed what the problem was it was the wheel arch cover which had lost one of the plastic fixing nuts which when he tapped it it made the bloody clonking sound. He secured it with a new one and we haven't heard the problem since. Might be something simple as a lost fixing clip or a few loose ones, hope this helps. Andy

Darn, Andy I had such high hopes!  There was even a loose mud flap plastic bolt tthat tightened easily by hand.  Sadly however it's not that.   The search goes on...  Thanks for the suggestion though and I hope it'll be solve someone else's knock.

I've had a noise similar to what you described coming from the front offside for nearly a year.
Car has been into dealers nearly 20 times and had most of the suspension replaced on that side.

A couple of weeks ago I took it to yet another dealer and they identified the problem as being the top engine mount which was replaced and appears to have cured it at last.

I'm very interested to hear top engine mount.  On further testing, deep thought and testing I reckon that at slow speed the knocking is much more noticeable when in too high a gear, ie when the engine is wobbling more.  So, now the challenge is to find the top engine mounting bolt. Anyone know where it is?  Top of the engine on the LHS I expect but any pointers much appreciated.

Got one top of engine on drivers side, one on top of gearbox on passenger side and then the roll restrictor at rear usually down low

The gearbox one would be the top suspect based on my sense of where the noise is coming from.  Is it something that can be tightened?   Is it a manageable job for a home mechanic do you think?

If bolts loose can be tightened but usually it's failed rubber so would need replacing.
So long as you have basic skills, tools and trolley jack to support gearbox then it's easy enough to change

No, sorry, still havn't taken the plunge and attacked the lhs engine mounting which is top of my suspect list.  I'm in two minds about whether to take it in and get it done or to punt the approx 60 on the part and do it myself.  Will let you know the outcome in due course.

My son in law had the same problem and it was the bolt in the passenger side gearbox mount. He replaced the bolt which snapped and dropped the gear box out. It reoccoured so I would buy the complete mount, new, to fix the problem. Not an overly difficult job to do he did this on a camping field and took him about an hour after finding a trolley jack.

Now replaced the roll bar bush and that hasn't cleared the problem.  In fact it was fairly obvious as soon as I took out the roll bar bush that it was in fine condition.
Worked my way down to having a look at the gearbox mounting today, needed to remove the air filter box, battery and battery tray to get a good look at it.  Very hard indeed to tell by looking how worn the rubber is.  Next stop to replace that.  So far I have replaced:

roll bar drop link
steering tie rod
roll bar bush

The search goes on..  Will update as I make progress.

Gearbox mounting replaced.  No change.  At least I know it's not the gearbox mounting.  In fact the one I took out looked good, possibly better than the one I bought from a breaker yard for 30.  This part looks really robust and I'd be surprised if it failed.  So the search goes on.  Suspension possibly?
