Title: Mk3 diagnosis socket? & low end torque

Two questions re Mk3 1.8 Diesel

Are they supposed to have low torque at low revs and loads of pull above 2000rpm?  My Mk1 had plenty of low end grunt, I stalled the new one 3 times in row.

Do Mk3 have a diagnostic socket

Stalling has been a problem with many including myself, has been talked about on various forums, mine is much much better since a software update last year.

How many miles has it covered? the cam belt change is stated as 125.000 but have heard of failures around 100.000mls
The Lynx engine has the normal toothed belt driving the cam from the pump but the pump is driven by either a chain cassette or a toothed belt cassette both in oil and this is the one that fails.

It's done 87000, maybe time to think about doing the belts / chain.

Chris,

I am interested in improving the stalling problem, it isn't like stalling normally where the engine would come to a sudden halt, it just seems to die when I feather the clutch, it is a bit dangerous I think and is hardly green when I have rev up to compensate.

You say you had yours reprogrammed, is this a main dealer job?  Also possibly separate issue, which cables and software do I need to connect a PC to the diagnostic socket? for general purposes.

I have VCDS lite and a cable but I relalise that the software at least will not work with the mK3.  I also have a little cheap red box which does connect but doesn't seem to show very much.

Mine was a software update from Fords, the problem I had was stalling when pulling away or manoeuvring in tight spaces, mines a 2.0 163ps so don't know if it's applicable to your model, have you looked HERE (http://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRegSelector.do;jsessionid=DDA340656E4829807FBE3ECC46BE4E63.fcvas512) if there's anything outstanding for your car.

I have a U 480 generic reader but will not connect to this car at all, although personally I'm not to worried as it is a lease car

I've just collected the car from the main dealer after a diagnostic, result no codes, recalibrated PCM to latest level and reset KAM (what ever that is?).

In the short journey I have just done it certainly seem to pull away and drive at low revs much better than before. :)

Since my last post, I have become increasing disatisfied with the low torque and stalling.  I don't know whether it has gone off since the software upgrade or if my expectation has increased, but it's behavior is not acceptable.  The 'torque switches on' at around 2000 rpm.

I can't belive the car was intended to be like this, but I am not keen on paying the dealer to have another crack at it and it seems imposible to get any further information about it.  can anyone throw any more light on it/

PS The Mk1 is still in the drive and I am seriously thinking of getting it welded and back on the road, as it seems to me to be a much better car for this and some other reasons :(.

Further to last post, I read on this forum or possibly elsewhere that the cam shaft sensor may contribute to the low torque / stalling problem.  I wasn't over enthusiastic about this as the dealer hadn't done this or mentioned it when they did the software update. Eventually I bought one (about 30) and fitted it,  easy to do as it fits on top of the rocker cover with one M5 screw (8mm socket needed).

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the problem seems much improved,  it will now accelerate reasonably below 2000rpm.

Hope this might help someone else.

PS I did get the Mk1 back on the road, so I have 2 Galaxys  now, does anyone want to buy a much improved Mk3 ??  :)
