New owner and lots of questions :D
« on: April 24, 2016, 08:46:25 PM »
Hi all, we've just brought a 58 plate 2.2 Titanium and after a bit of help.

1st of all, I feel I've been ripped off, its just, not quite right in some sense.
The front bumper and lower half of both sides looks like it has been painted really crudely, I a don't know why.
Its little things as well like of all the bolts and fir trees to hold various trims and panels in there are a couple missing from each panel.

1. Looking for parts on ebay and they seem rare, can I search for Galaxy parts seeing as its the same car? how interchangeable are the parts? (mainly trim panels)

2. My parking sensors don't work, how on earth do I go about detecting and diagnosing the fault?

3. Can you have cup holder and storage bit on both sides in row 3?

4. Can you retrofit rear seat back tables?

5. What are the correct tyre size and psi for the st style alloys? its got 235, 45, R18 but they seem a lot wider than the wheels?

6. I was told, and there is a questionable garage receipt to evidence it, that the cam belt clutch kit diesel and water pump were all done in 2014, at about 85000.

I know the cam is not due until 120000ish so is there a reason you all of your opinions why this would have been done early? is it a common practice thing?

I was told it has premium sound system (I assumes speakers) not sure how I can check this?

Also told it has x sport rear spoiler and bumper, again, not sure what the difference is.

Are there any other general hints and tips for the s-max, in all its a good car, looks nice (bar the crap paint job up close :D )

Cheers all.

Howdy! I don't own and have not worked on the S-Max or Mk3 Galaxy so cannot be of much help specifically. However, poor paintwork is quite often attributable to substandard repairs after a crash, or a 'repair' done 'on the cheap' to avoid an insurance claim. When you say the front bumper and both (lower) sides look suspect, do you mean the whole side of the vehicle or just the front wings for example? Badly or improperly repaired previous accident damage could also be the reason why your parking sensors do not work, and missing/ damaged trim clips mean that somebody has been in there previously messing about, the question is: why? If this is apparent on multiple trim panels on a '58 plate car then I would say you are right to be suspicious, as either the vehicle has previously had lots of problems which needed repair (which isn't good in it's own right!) or it's been previously trashed/ vandalised/ abused etc.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

Specifically to number 6:

120,000 is a recommended _maximum_.  This means that Ford is not liable if your belt snaps earlier.  There are multiple instances of this occurring on various forums.  On the 2 & 2.2 engines, you have to remove the cambelt to access the water pump, so the water pump is usually changed at cambelt time as no garage would replace a used cambelt.  The high pressure diesel pump is an extremely expensive unit - I would be surprised if that was changed and the injectors did not need changing also.  Clutch at 85,000 is probably at the low end of average - it's usually the DMF that fails but you might as well change the clutch and throwout bearing at the same time.

Premium sound system usually means the Sony branded unit and speakers with non-paper cones.

Some parts will match Galaxy, some will match Mondeo.  This is a useful site.

As is this.
Click on the vehicle tab, then enter your registration or VIN.  On the right side there will be a panel with the basic configuration of your vehicle.  The link at the bottom of that drops a list of the precise configuration of your vehicle when it was new.  It will list any extra stuff installed when it was built.

From your description, I have to say it sounds like you were royally stitched up unless the price was substantially less than £5k.

Mike, I didn't want to hear that lol

By side I mean the entire length of the car, but just the lower half.
The parking sensors have been cracked at the front for definite,
Mechanically it seems sound, drives fine everything.
With regards to the price, I haven't seen any s-maxs sub £5000 unless they are 160,000 plus?
