Only one foglight!
« on: March 22, 2017, 11:28:12 PM »
Hi, my passenger side fog light is not working, bulb is ok, so does anyone know what fuse they are on, or have any experience with same. Thanks.

First thing would be checking for a feed with multimeter use the body as earth so you can check for 12v on the live and continuity check the earth wire to the body

They are joint fused along with the rears so if ones and/or the rears are working then its not the fuse.

Got this checked with my mechanic and earth is fine as are the wires inside the bumper, however, there is no power coming from the control unit to the wires to that specific fog light. I am thinking this would be a Ford main dealer job??

Control unit = light switch?  If so, I would source one from ebay or suchlike and try that first.  It will be a much cheaper option (and more likely to be successful) than even driving past a Ford dealership.

I would have thought if the switch faulty then no fog lights at all, but I still have one lit. There is power coming to the driver side but nothing to the passenger side.

No power out of control unit to one fog light only sounds very much like the control unit is kaput as it's getting signal from switch as other side works, it is probably a ford dealer/ford specialist job to replace and program??

I'm still confused about what you mean by control unit.  This page (I know it's for the mondeo but they are almost identical in fittings) doesn't show a "control unit" (what I would call a module) for the lights.

http://catcar.info/ford/?lang=en&l=bWFya2V0PT1ldXJvfHxjYXRfaWQ9PTExMDAyfHxjYWJicj09R0NBMnx8dGhrPT0zfHxzdD09NjB8fHN0cz09eyIyMCI6IkV1cm9wZSIsIjMwIjoiTW9uZGVvIENBMiAyMDA3LSIsIjQwIjoiNCBFbGVjdHJpY2FsIiwiNTAiOiI0MTkwMSBFbGVjdHJpY2FsLlZlaGljbGUgTW9kdWxlcyBTd2l0Y2hlcyBBbmQgUmVsYXlzIiwiNjAiOiI0MTkwMTA1IFZlaGljbGUgTW9kdWxlcyBBbmQgU2Vuc29ycyJ9fHxhbHBoYT09NHx8Z3JvdXA9PTQxOTAxfHxzZWN0PT00MDE3QU9afHxzZXQ9PUEyNDE5MDF8fGltZz09RzAxNjI4MjEwOXx8ZjEyPT0tNjYyNjAwMTkyKzEzNQ%3D%3D

There's also nothing that I could call a control unit on the fog lamp page, unless it is contained in the lamp itself.

There is only the light switch on this page.
http://catcar.info/ford/?lang=en&l=bWFya2V0PT1ldXJvfHxjYXRfaWQ9PTExMDAyfHxjYWJicj09R0NBMnx8dGhrPT0zfHxzdD09NjB8fHN0cz09eyIyMCI6IkV1cm9wZSIsIjMwIjoiTW9uZGVvIENBMiAyMDA3LSIsIjQwIjoiNCBFbGVjdHJpY2FsIiwiNTAiOiI0MTcwNSBFbGVjdHJpY2FsLkluc3RydW1lbnQgUGFuZWwgUmVsYXRlZCBQYXJ0cyIsIjYwIjoiNDE3MDUwNSBJbnN0cnVtZW50IFBhbmVsIFJlbGF0ZWQgUGFydHMifXx8YWxwaGE9PTR8fGdyb3VwPT00MTcwNXx8c2VjdD09NDAxNUFLTXx8c2V0PT1BMjQxNzA1fHxpbWc9PUcwMTYyNzk2MDd8fGYxMj09LTY3OTQwNzM2MCsxMzU%3D

There are 19 variations of that switch, some of which do much more complicated things than just turning the lights on and off.

So what/where is the control unit?

BTW, that website seems to be a good replacement for the deceased Eucat one.

The control unit referred to is the body control module I am guessing, pretty much everything goes through them these days.

OK, thanks.  I was looking for a specific unit for foglamp control.  The BCM does make sense, somewhat, presumably to give you bulb out warnings and suchlike.

I would assume it is easier for manufacturers to have everything controlled by 1 unit rather than having separate controllers for CDL,bulb failure etc. Not so handy for the DIY'er as it is more expensive to replace and program.

If the control unit, or BCM is kaput, then it does not seem to be affecting anything else. Or is it only a matter of time?

difficult to say really could be an isolated fault or sign of more to come.
The person that looked at car are they a decent sparky?
Also does your car have bulb failure warning and is it flagging up a fog light fault on dash?
I can't see why bcm would have separate outputs for each side,I would think a single signal in to turn on and single feed out to lamps with wire branching off.
What about a decent auto electrician taking a look?

Its been a while but Ford say BCM is at fault but everything else seems fine. It is a very expensive fix for a foglight to replace the BCM, but, can anyone tell me would it be asking for trouble to feed the non-runner from the working one?

Yes. Foglights are 55w/8amp so you'll be doubling that to 110W / 16amp which is a significant increase. Does the Mk3 monitor the bulbs? If not then get some LED bulbs, switch them out and then splice the good feed. The LED's will draw less then 5 amp so you'll be much safer with that.

No, the Mk3 does not monitor the foglights. That sounds like a good plan with the LEDs. Thanks.
